Duties

Help
  • Drive and operate all assigned fire-fighting and emergency equipment.
  • Perform after work operations inspections in areas such as offices, high-hazard work areas, shops, warehouses, medical facilities, etc.
  • Serve as a trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property.
  • Provide care as Emergency Medical Technician and first response ambulance driver-operator (EMT).
  • Serve as a member of the Chemical Accident/Incident Control (CAIC) Emergency Response Team performing firefighting, rescue, EMT service and assistance with decontamination as required.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) position. You will be subject to and must pass a pre-employment drug test AND be subject to random drug testing during employment as required by Army regulations (i.e., AR 600-85).
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a favorable National Agency Check (NACI) with inquiries.
  • Incumbent must pass a pre-employment physical and annually thereafter.
  • Incumbent must participate in the department's wellness program to include a structured physical exercise program, annual physical examination, and annual physical agility test.
  • This is a mission essential position. This entails continued performance of duties and responsibilities during periods of fire, hazardous duty and other emergency operations.
  • Incumbent will work a 72-hour weekly tour and may be required to work weekends and holidays.
  • This position requires heavy physical effort in the frequent handling of objects such as cylinders and extinguishers weighing 45 lbs. or more; may be required to lift/carry personnel such as an adult in emergency situations.
  • Your certifications must be on file in the DoD Firefighter Certification Database or by the Pro Board OR Fire Service Professional Qualifications System-International Accreditation for Fire Service Organizations.
  • This position requires you possess and AND maintain ALL of the following Certifications: Firefighter I and II certifications.
  • This position requires you to possess AND maintain a certificate as a National Registry or Colorado Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Basic Life Support.
  • This position requires you to possess and and maintain a Operator (Pumper) certification.
  • This position requires you to obtain and maintain a valid, Colorado state driver's license. (Note: You MUST submit a copy of your state driver's license with your application package.)
  • Incumbent must successfully complete training in hazardous waste management procedures within six(6) months after the date of appointment to this position and will not work in unsupervised situations until these training requirements have been met.
  • The position requires the incumbent to wear a uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • This position is designated as Inclement Weather Essential. The incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized experience is defined as: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in federal service which includes demonstrated experience 1). Performing firefighting, rescue, decontamination, and/or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) services under various conditions; 2). Responds to all classes of fires, including those involving radioactive and/or hazardous materials, medical emergencies, rescue operations, AND 3). Operating all firefighting equipment such as; fire extinguishers, ambulance, brush trucks, breathing apparatus, emergency rescue equipment, and/or variety of pumps.

You MUST submit a copy of the following certificates:
  • Firefighter I/II certifications.
  • HAZMAT Operations certification.
  • National Registry or Colorado Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Basic Life Support certification.
  • Basic; Driver Operator - Pumper; Driver Operator certification.

Additional Eligibility Requirements:
Proof of Age: As this is a Primary/Rigorous firefighter position, your application package MUST include a government issued document indicating your date of birth. Failure to submit this document will result in your application being marked as incomplete and you WILL NOT receive further consideration for this position.

Maximum Entry Age (MEA): The MEA for firefighters is 37. An employee originally hired into a covered firefighter position must be hired by the last day of the month he/she reaches 37.

Maximum Re-entry Age: An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she is able to complete 20 years of covered service by his/her mandatory retirement age. The maximum re-entry for the individual is calculated by determining the total amount of time he/she has served on a covered position and subtracting that from age 57 if a firefighter. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position.

Waivers to Maximum Entry Age: MEA may be waived, but only under specific circumstances and only if approved by the authorized entity: waivers to MEA for firefighters must be approved by the local command.

Mandatory Separation: An employee who occupies a special retirement position is subject to mandatory separation when all the following minimum conditions are met: age 57; completion of 20 years of creditable service as a firefighter. Mandatory separation is effective on the last day of the month in which the minimum conditions are met. Employees who are subject to mandatory separation are given a notice period of at least 60 days.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-6).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. However, for this job you must meet the qualification requirement using only experience. No substitutions permitted.
