Duties

Help
  • You will be engaged in theoretical and computational research of atomic physics collision and radiation processes.
  • You will be responsible for exercising atomic models employing computational techniques to calculate atomic data, combining this data with kinetics codes for level populations, and incorporating the effects on the populations.
  • You will be responsible for developing advanced numerical codes for making synthetic spectra of plasmas to compare with experimental data, and for formulating such studies as a spectroscopic diagnostic of laboratory plasmas.
  • You will apply extensive detailed configuration accounting of atomic levels in the atomic processes, kinetics, and transport, including inner shell holes and double excited sates.
  • You will be responsible for formulating and proposing experimental studies on university class pulsed power and laser drivers.
  • You will be able to develop an equation-of-state model for the plasma that is self-consistent with the ionization populations in the detailed configuration accounting.
  • You will do calculations for atomic data and equation-of-state shall be organized into tables for use in radiation hydrodynamics codes.
  • You will serve as associate investigator on one or more programs.
  • You will be assigned to take a leadership or critical support role related to his/her main areas of effort in the DOE/NNSA program on non-LTE, high energy density plasmas, and carrying through their assignments to completion.

Conditions of employment

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
  • New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. To learn more about E-Verify, including your rights and responsibilities, visit e-verify.gov
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirements, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05/10 grade level or NP-02 pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: (1) Engaging in theoretical and computational research of atomic physics collision and radiation processes relevant to (i) the excitation/ionization behavior of non-LTE laboratory plasmas and (ii) the corresponding absorption and emission spectra; (2) Exercising atomic models employing state-of-the-art computational techniques to calculate accurate atomic data, combining this data with state-of-the-art kinetics codes for level populations, and incorporating the effects on the populations due to photo-pumping and photo-ionization through non-local radiation transport; (3) Developing advanced numerical codes for making synthetic spectra of plasmas to compare with experimental data, and for formulating such studies as a spectroscopic diagnostic of laboratory plasmas; (4) Applying extensive detailed configuration accounting of atomic levels in the atomic processes, kinetics, and transport, including inner shell holes and double excited sates; (5) Formulating and proposing experimental studies on university class pulsed power and laser drivers; and (6) Developing an equation-of-state model for the plasma that is self-consistent with the ionization populations in the detailed configuration accounting.

Additional qualification information can be found from the following Office of Personnel Management website: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/#url=Group-Standards

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education

Basic Education Requirements:
Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics
or
Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

NP-03 Level: Specialized Experience may be substituted with the following education:
3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree
or
Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
