Duties

Help
  • Perform machining work required in the fabrication, repair, rebuilding or modify parts and items of equipment used in engineering investigations and structures, devices and components in the operation and maintenance of Mat Sinking Unit facilities.
  • Determine work procedures, machines, tools, equipment and attachments to be used.
  • Plan and layout work, set up and operate machine tools, and perform bench and assembly work.
  • Study and interpret single, sets, and series of blueprints, drawings and sketches featuring orthographic, isometric, and other projections of items to be worked.
  • Operate machine tools to cut, drill, bore, tap, ream, shape, turn, mill, grind, hone and lap items.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Machinist~ without more than normal supervision. Duties include: operating conventional machine tools such as engine lathes, milling machines, shapers, planers, radial arm drill presses, grinders, etc. and using some portable machine tools. Completing basic machine set up. Reading and interpreting blue prints and drawings. Preparing rough sketches for fabrication. Determining the appropriate machine processes to achieve required end products. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work involves continuous standing and reaching with intermittent walking, stooping, bending, sitting, and lifting. Handles objects weighing from 1 to 50 pounds. Overhead crane, hand trucks, lifts and other workers are available to assist with heavier items.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in a well-lighted, heated, ventilated shop with concrete floors. Exposed to dust from grinding, oil from machines, dirt, heat, noises, and fumes. Subject to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips, dust in the lungs, cuts, bruises, injuries to hands from use of machine and hand tools, skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds, and to strains from infrequent moving, lifting, and handling of heavy items. Wears safety glasses, safety shoes and other safety apparel and equipment as required.
