BTS is the Principal Federal Statistical Agency that provides objective, comprehensive, and relevant information on the extent and use of the Nation’s transportation system and how well the system performs.
Summary

Produce high quality maps, charts, and graphics. Maps include both reference and thematic maps and may be static or dynamic and rendered in 2D or 3D.
Conduct critical review of numerous new and revised charts, maps, and related products.
Review, evaluate, and edit for completeness, accuracy, and validity a variety of geographic materials including geospatial data and its attributes, maps, and database tables.
Design and carry out cartographic projects, operations, and studies.
The ideal candidate is a professional with experience creating innovative static and dynamic cartographic products which require simplifying complex problems into information that is easily conveyed in understandable ways through maps.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Qualifications
To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must (1) meet the Education Requirement for the series, (2) provide a copy of transcripts for verification, AND (3) meet the specialized experience requirements.
To qualify for the GS-12, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-11, it must include:
Experience in creating or analyzing maps or other cartographic products.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
Cartography - Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods related to the research, design, development, or revision of maps, charts, and related cartographic products, and photo-grammatic and cartographic processing.
Research - Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Education
Mandatory Education Requirements: All applicants must meet one of the following requirements to qualify for consideration for a cartographer position:
Degree: cartography; or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e., college level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites). or Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in cartography, or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography, and/or directly related science, and related mathematics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
