Summary

The Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks located in Fayetteville, Arkansas is recruiting for the Chief of Medicine Service. The incumbent reports to the facility Chief of Staff. Incumbent will be organizationally responsible for approximately 100 employee in four locations, as well as contract employees in various specialties. Board Certification/Eligibility in Internal Medicine is required for this position; Experience in management in a hospital setting is highly preferred.

Duties

Help

The Chief of Medicine Service is responsible for oversight and performance measures of all Medical Service operations at the Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks. The Incumbent reports directly to the Chief of Staff and is a key clinical resource for the Medical Center Director. The individual possesses excellent interpersonal skills and provides administrative, clinical, programmatic leadership. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning, developing, and directing all administrative and clinical functions of the service line.
  • Provides oversight of the Inpatient Acute Care Unit, Medical Services, Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Department, Subspecialty Services, Physical Therapy, Ultrasound Services, Nuclear Medicine, and Respiratory Therapy.
  • Maintains a patient panel.
  • Provides oversight responsibility for residents and medical students.
Malpractice: Physicians are covered under the Tort Claims Protection Act.
Paid Time Off: 8 hours Annual Leave accrued per biweekly pay period; 4 hours Sick leave accrued per biweekly pay period; 10 paid Federal holidays.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm (other times as required); subject to change based on agency needs

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Board Certificaion/Eligibility in Internal Medicine.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience: Experience in management in a hospital setting.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: VA Directive and Handbook 5019, applicants must be able to perform the duties as a Physician. Light lifting (under 15lbs), light carrying (under 15lbs), use of fingers, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other, hearing (aid permitted), emotional stability, mental stability.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
