Duties

Help
  • Acquire and evaluate new small fruit (blueberry, red and black raspberry, blackberry, and strawberry) germplasm and incorporate and develop the germplasm into cultivars for the commercial industry.
  • Develop berry crop cultivars with increased yield and fruit quality requiring reduced production and consumer costs.
  • Generate and apply genomic strategies to bridge the gap between genetic markers and applied plant breeding, such as high throughput phenotyping for small fruits, genome sequencing, mapping populations, and statistical analysis of complex inheritance
  • Collaborate with other ARS, university, and private sector scientists including breeders, geneticists, horticulturists, plant physiologists, plant pathologists, and food scientists to build multi-disciplinary team necessary for this research.
  • Analyze, interpret, and disseminate research findings in the form of reports, presentations and publications in scientific journals.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements:

Genetics series, 0440
Degree: genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics.

AND
In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.

At the GS-12:
Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or possess an equivalent combination of graduate level education and experience. Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped applicants with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to do the work.

Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-12 level of this position are: Conceiving, planning or conducting independent and collaborative research related to plant breeding and genetics which includes using horticultural, molecular biology, or genetic approaches to identifying superior parents, perform hybridizations for seedling populations, or evaluate selections in field trials; Presenting research results at scientific meetings; and Publishing independent research results in peer-reviewed journals in horticulture, molecular biology, or genetics dealing with plant breeding and genomics.

At the GS-13:
Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service.

Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-13 level of this position are: Conceiving, planning or conducting independent and collaborative research related to plant breeding and genetics which includes using horticultural, molecular biology, or genetic approaches to identifying superior parents, perform hybridizations for seedling populations, or evaluate selections in field trials; Presenting research results at scientific meetings; Publishing independent research results in peer-reviewed journals in horticulture, molecular biology, or genetics dealing with plant breeding and genomics; and Supervising undergraduate students or technicians to accomplish research.


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Additional information

This position requires the selectee to undergo a pre-employment check and a full background investigation.
