Summary

The Pharmacy Supervisor work is performed under the general direction of the Associate Chief of Pharmacy Operations. In the absence of the supervisor, the Lead Pharmacist selected by the supervisor assumes this responsibility. The Associate Chief of Pharmacy Operations will provide direction in terms of objectives, priorities and deadlines. Plans and carries out work assignments, resolves problems on recurring assignments in accordance with oral or written instructions, policies, training.

Duties include but not limited to the following:

  • Maintains effective relations with medical, professional and administrative staffs of our institution.
  • Responsible for providing professional guidance to medical and professional staff.
  • Responsible for enforcement of VA Hospital and Service policy.
  • Professionally supervises/guides pharmacists, technicians, clerks, and students.
  • Completes performance evaluations. Recommends awards and/or disciplinary actions.
  • Verifying physicians' orders to be complete and appropriate for dose, route, and frequency.
  • Screening orders for incompatibilities, patient allergies, and drug interactions.
  • Provides basic consultant information concerning drug therapy to physicians, nurses, and health care professionals.
  • Evaluates a patient's ability to understand medication instructions, and provides oral and written counseling on their drug therapy.
  • Clarifies and resolves all problems identified which relate to patient drug therapy.
  • Refers all matters requiring further administrative action to the Chief or Assistant Chief Pharmacist.
  • Participates in emergency patient care, i.e., CPR team.
  • Monitors patients for medical and pharmaceutical problems, and documents information.
  • Actively participates in the quality assurance program.

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: (1) Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. Verification of approved degree programs may be obtained from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, 20 North Clark Street, Suite 2500, Chicago, Illinois 60602-5109; phone: (312) 664-3575, or through their Web site at: http://www.acpe-accredit.org/. (NOTE: Prior to 2005 ACPE accredited both baccalaureate and Doctor of Pharmacy terminal degree program. Today the sole degree is Doctor of Pharmacy.)(2) Graduates of foreign pharmacy degree programs meet the educational requirement if the graduate is able to provide proof of achieving the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Commission (FPGEC) Certification, which includes passing the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT).
  • Licensure: Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia. The pharmacist must maintain current registration if this is a requirement for maintaining full, current, and unrestricted licensure. A pharmacist who has, or has ever had, any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, section B, paragraph 16.
  • English Language Proficiency: Pharmacists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
Preferred Experience:
  • 1 year In-patient experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
Grade Determinations: Applicants must have one year of experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-12). Responsible for the professional and administrative management of an assigned area in pharmacy service, to include providing professional and administrative management of an assigned area in pharmacy service, to include budgetary execution; supervising multiple pharmacists and technicians; managing people, maintaining effective interdepartmental relations, and cooperating with other services to accomplish the medical facility's mission and goals; developing performance standards, assuring that the program area is compliant with all regulatory and accrediting body requirements, designing and implementing orientation and training programs for staff, and developing and maintaining systems to monitor the performance of staff activities; developing policies and procedures relative regulatory and quality standards pertaining to pharmacy. Pharmacists assigned to this position must demonstrate the following KSAs:

1.Ability to effectively supervise subordinate staff.
2. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to persuade and influence clinical and management decisions.
3. Expert understanding of regulatory and quality standards pertaining to pharmacy.
4. Skill in managing people or programs.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-13.

Physical Requirements: The Pharmacy Supervisor must be physically and mentally able to efficiently perform the duties of this position. The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing for prolonged periods of time, lifting/carrying of supplies weighing at least 50 pounds, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling of equipment and carts through various terrains.
