Duties

Help
  • Check and record pump pressures, water, electrical meter readings, water levels, telemetric level indicators, and charts and make necessary adjustments using the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system or manual operations.
  • Perform water plant operational duties required for the production, treatment and distribution of water to include 11 water reservoirs.
  • Perform chlorine, pH, calcium hardness, sodium chloride and fluoride tests of water.
  • Determine and make appropriate adjustments to feed rates. Inspect chlorinators.
  • Provide preventative maintenance on pumps, motors, valves, meters and injectors. Provide operations and maintenance of sand filtration systems for swimming pools. Perform backwashing procedures.
  • Prepare surfaces and paint metal, wood and concrete on equipment, interior/exterior walls, floors, trim and fixtures. Cut grass, weeds, and clear brush.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires passing a pre-employment physical and annually thereafter.
  • This position is a designated drug testing position. The incumbent must comply with Drug Abuse Testing Program requirements in accordance with Army Regulation (AR) 600-85.
  • This position may require the incumbent to respond to emergency calls after regular working hours.
  • This position requires the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a driver's license in one of the 50 US states or possessions and any installation and/or DoD requirement.
  • Incumbent must possess either a current grade 1 Water Treatment Plant Operator certification or the Certified Pool and Spa Operator (CPO) certification and maintain it. UPON SELECTION YOU MUST PROVIDE A COPY OF THE REQUIRED CERTIFICATION.
  • After 1 year the incumbent is required to take the test to achieve the remaining certification (either Water Treatment Plant Operator certification or the Certified Pool and Spa Operator (CPO) certification) and maintain it.
  • This position may be subject to rotating shifts.
  • The former incumbent has return rights to this position.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Water Treatment Plant Operator~ without more than normal supervision: monitoring pumping equipment and gauges according to a prescribed schedule and perform routine operator maintenance; regulate water volume and perform simple treatment processes such as aerating and softening water; regulate the amount of water drawn into the system from one or more sources, pump it into storage tanks or distribution systems; read meters, gauges, and charts; record the readings; and consolidate the data into reports; conduct and record basic water sampling tests such as fluoride or chloride content and ion concentration (pH) levels; perform routine operator maintenance such as lubricating, cleaning, changing filters, and painting water pumping equipment and pipes, and assist higher grade operators in performing minor operational repairs. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element)
  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: A degree of heavy physical effort is present when the operator is required to open and close heavy valves; lift heavy equipment, tools, and containers of chemicals; work in strained or awkward positions; climbing ladders, mountain trails, walking the deep well tunnels; and continuously move about the plant.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed both in and out of doors. Work requires regular ingress and egress to the deep well tunnel, (A Non-permit required confined space as long as the atmospheric conditions do not change. In the event the atmospheric conditions change the Deep well Tunnel is re-classified, as a permit required confined space. There is exposure to poisonous/corrosive chemicals and compounds, infection or disease, gas and fumes. Protective devices such as self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), respirators; full-face respirators; chemical gloves/aprons, safety shoes, safety glasses/goggles, hard hats, hearing protection, harnesses must be worn. There is also danger due to falls into open tanks and manholes as well as the possibility of cuts, bruises and broken bones.
