Through consultation with collaborators, partners, and unit scientists, the scientist will select and balance efforts in solving research problems, providing technology transfer activities, and addressing administrative concerns.
Lead grant proposal preparation and planning, organizing, coordinating, conducting, collecting/ recording data, interpreting data, and reporting research as related to the focus areas of the Forest and Woodland Ecosystems Science Program.
Adapt and apply existing techniques to address defined issues related to forest pathology, such as interactions among pathogens, microbial communities, host tree, and the biotic/abiotic environment.
Conduct basic and applied research in forest pathology and related aspects of microbiology, genetics, molecular biology, and forest ecology to improve management decision making.
Participate in cooperative alliances with various disciplines such as entomology, soil science, tree physiology, molecular genetics, bioinformatics, forest ecology, etc.
Analyzes and interprets research results, prepares reports and manuscripts for publication, and presents papers and talks to professional and lay audiences.

Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in: plant pathology; or a related scientific discipline that included at least 20 semester hours in basic botany or plant science, and 10 semester hours in plant pathology.
Courses in botany, plant physiology, plant taxonomy, plant pathology, agronomy, forestry, horticulture, or similar subjects may be used to meet the 20-semester-hour requirement in basic botany or plant science. To meet the specific 10-semester-hour requirement in plant pathology, the courses must have been in plant pathology, or have dealt with specific subject matter areas of plant pathology such as those concerned with viruses, fungal or bacterial diseases, host-plant relationships, biotic or chemical controls, environmental or physiological diseases, parasitic diseases, etc.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.
Specialized Experience Requirement:
At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience at this level includes at least 3 of the following:
Conducting full cycle of basic and applied research in forest pathology and related aspects of microbiology, genetics, molecular biology and forest ecology.
Gathering specific genetic information on components of forest disease, such as pathogens, beneficial microbes, microbial communities and host trees.
Applying genetic and genomic techniques to address one or more interacting components of forest disease and forest health, sustainability, productivity, carbon sequestration, resilience, and other environmental benefits.
Disseminating research findings at conferences or scientific meetings, newsletters, technical reports, publications and other modes of communication.

Conferred Master's Degree directly related to the work of this position which is forest pathology or forest pathology.

This is a research scientist position and is classified under the scientist career plan. Research scientists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science and technology. Final grade level will be determined by a peer review panel. The purpose of the initial review panel is to determine the grade level upon entry into a position.
