Duties

Help
  • You will perform a variety of routine and special technical duties in connection with the conservation, physical maintenance, preservation, and inventory of the collections.
  • You will prepare reports, documenting the conditions of artifacts, treatment options, and methods of reservation/conservation.
  • You will perform routine duties such as receipt and unpacking of objects scheduled for conservation treatment, verifying invoices and related shipping records, storing, cleaning, photographing and marking of artifacts.
  • You will perform research to answer technical and general inquiries on historical properties in the collections undergoing conservation and preservation procedures.

Qualifications

This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factor is: Resume must demonstrate experience working in a professional conservation laboratory setting including familiarity with laboratory safety and appropriate handling of chemicals.

In addition to the Basic Education Requirements for this position:
GS-09: Your resume must demonstrate one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing most or all of the following 1) Examining artifacts for the implementation of safe and approved conservation treatments on artifacts; 2) Documenting the condition of artifacts, treatment options, and methods of reservation/conservation used on artifacts; 3) Assisting in the handling artifacts and organic materials including wood, leather, textiles, and other organic artifacts during the verification of artifact records, storing, cleaning, photographing, marking of artifacts and other duties prior to conservation treatments; 4) Researching databases, accession records, technical publications, book, and manuscripts to aid in process of answering questions about artifact historical validity, identification, and provenance in the collection; and 5) Assisting in the conduction of standard chemical and physical testing in a laboratory setting to determine an artifact's age, composition, original appearance, level of treatment/restoration, appropriate preservation method, and conservation storage requirements.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess
A. Degree: museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field (Conservation, Museum Studies, American History, or applicable subject matter field)
or
B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major, as above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
or
C. Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown

Substitution of Education for GS-09 Experience: Master's or equivalent graduate degree and or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree and or LL.B. or J.D., if related to the position being filled; OR, a combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience is sufficient for meeting the minimum qualification requirements for this position.

Substitution of Education for GS-11 Experience: P.H.D or equivalent doctoral degree and or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree and or LL.M degree, if related to the position being filled; OR, a combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience is sufficient for meeting the minimum qualification requirements for this position.
