Summary

About the Position: You will provide Police Officer services in support of the United States Army Garrison, Directorate of Emergency Services (DES) at Fort Hamilton, New York. The Directorate of Emergency Services plans, directs and provides law and order, fire and emergency services, and protection operations in support of Ft. Hamilton in order to provide a safe and secure environment for the soldiers, civilians, and families that work, live, or visit the installations.

Duties

Help
  • Interpret rules, regulations, and operating procedures; answers general inquiries.
  • Receive and records radio, telephone and personal messages; requests for information and assistance.
  • Act as the point of contact in an emergency situation followed by the supervisory police officer.
  • Relay messages and instructions to patrol officers.
  • Inform employees of changes in policy and operating procedures.
  • Inspect personnel to ensure they have appropriate equipment and meet appearance standards.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Subject to irregular and/or rotating shifts, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Incumbent is also required to work overtime as directed and is subject to recall for emergency overtime.
  • This position is subject to the provisions of the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban commonly referred to as the Lautenberg Amendment.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • Mandatory drug testing on a recurring basis.
  • Must be proficient in the use of assigned firearms/weapons, pass an initial qualification.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state drivers license.
  • Must wear the Department of the Army Security Guard (DASG) uniform IAW AR 190-56, maintain a high state of appearance and hygiene.
  • Employee must successfully complete the emergency 911 operators course, qualified breathalyzer and NCIC terminal operator within 12 months of employment.
  • Must successfully complete the U.S. Army Military Police School (USAMPS) Civilian Police Academy program instruction within one year if it has not already been completed.
  • May be exposed to inclement weather while working both inside and outside.
  • Required to undergo and successfully pass initial and annual re-certification of standard Army physical agility test.
  • Required to be certified in the use of radar detection equipment and alcohol detection equipment.
  • Work may involve lifting and carrying heavy objects of up to 50 pounds.
  • Must undergo and successfully pass an initial and annual physical examination and continue to be physically fit to perform the duties of a Desk Sergeant.
  • Requires the employee to obtain and maintain a secret clearance.
  • Required to carry firearms or other weapons authorized for their jurisdictions and required to re-familiarize themselves with authorized weapons periodically and demonstrate skill/proficiency in their use.

In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service which includes: (1) Receiving and relaying radio, telephone and/or personal messages involving emergencies, complaints, violations, crimes in progress, and/or accidents; (2) Experience enforcing police/security laws, regulations, practices and/or techniques which involve responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property; and (3) Reviewing and/or preparing police reports or documents ensuring completeness, accuracy and attention to detail

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
