Summary

This position is located at the Fort Smith National Cemetery in Fort Smith, AR.

The incumbent serves as the general supervisor over all field operations at the Fort Smith and Little Rock National Cemeteries. He/she has full responsibility for all interments, grounds maintenance and irrigation, buildings and structures, landscaping, and equipment maintenance activities.

Duties

Help

Incumbent will be responsible for functional establishment of selected portions of the cemeteries annual operating budget which pertain to field operations. The incumbent has oversight responsibility of both cemeteries and in the absence of the Director the incumbent may be called upon to serve in that capacity. Incumbent will also perform COR duties for various contracts that are set up to accomplish selected tasks with the cemeteries. He/she provides overall direction of all interment and grounds maintenance operations including oversight of the full grounds & subsequent interment contract operations at Little Rock NC. Works closely with Continental District office (CD) staff to establish and layout new gravesites throughout the cemetery. Completes daily gravesite assignments and supervises opening and closing of gravesites. Incumbent is also responsible for supervising all in-ground cremation activities and future columbaria activities. Works closely with office staff to order, receive and inspect all headstones, markers and niche covers for the cemetery.

Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement,10/09/2020.

Your background must demonstrate work involved in supervising interment activities, including layout and excavation of new grave sites, and reopening occupied gravesites which require extreme caution to avoid damage to previously interred containers.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Physical Requirements: Work is performed in both an office setting and field setting with exposure to outside weather conditions. The incumbent may operate machinery that causes noise and vibrations, emits carbon monoxide, has moving parts that may cut or harm the body and requires the use of safety/protective clothing and devices.

Working Conditions: Duty requires occasional travel to satellite facilities, various NCA conferences and other national cemeteries for training purposes. Public contact may be held away from the worksite for after hour meetings.
