Duties

Help
  • Serve as the subject matter expert and be responsible for the overall program direction and management for Wilderness, Wilderness Study Area, Wild and Scenic Rivers and Lands with Wilderness Characteristics.
  • Using your knowledge of special area management, you are responsible for planning and program guidance. You will serve as a leader for temporary employees, youth crews and volunteers.
  • Communication skills are very important as you will be interacting with many user groups with sometimes conflicting points of view. Much of the work done in the Steens Mountain Wilderness is controversial and contentious.
  • You will be deeply involved with the Steens Mountain Advisory Council and must keep the group up-to-date on current happenings within the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Area.
  • You will make recommendation to the Field Manager on how to implement and carry out the multiple use mission.
  • You will represent the Field Manager when working with internal and external organizations and represent the Bureau at conferences, seminars and other events.

GS-9 You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: conduct inventories and studies to determine recreation visitor use & site suitability; prepare recreation activity plans; work on environmental assessment projects related to recreation activities; process special recreation use permits including supervising events & performing compliance monitoring; coordinate the planning, operation, fee collection, & maintenance of developed campgrounds & trail heads.-OR-

Education: Successful completion of two (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Masters degree or have received a Masters. or equivalent graduate degree with directly related coursework; OR an appropriate combination of graduate level education (beyond 18 semester hours) and specialized experience that is directly related to this position that together meets the qualification requirements for this position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: The work is primarily sedentary. However, there may be some physical exertion such as walking; hiking; standing; bending; carrying of items such as books or maintenance equipment; driving an automobile or off-highway vehicle; operating a small boat, etc.

Work Environment: Work is typically performed in an adequately lighted and climate controlled office. Travel to recreation sites will be required. The position may be required to visit field sites where risks may include exposure to inclement weather and potential injury from falls, strains, bites, stings, etc. The position may require a non-traditional work schedule that includes weekends and holidays during the peak recreation season

Education
