Duties

Help
  • Plan and implement the logistics of projects associated with trail maintenance and reconstruction projects.
  • Inspect assigned areas to determine compliance with regulations or specifications.
  • Perform trail maintenance work independently by applying specific rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Resolve problems previously encountered to create efficiencies in work assignments.
  • Apply established trail construction/maintenance guidelines to create work efficiencies.
  • Operate construction tools (i.e., crosscut saws, axes) to ensure proper trail maintenance and construction
  • Operate hand and power tools to effectively complete work assignments.
  • Ensure proper tool maintenance in order to complete assigned work.
  • Walk and climb in steep, uneven terrain to access areas where work is to be performed.
  • Perform work outdoors where there is exposure to extremes of weather and temperature.
  • Perform physical labor that includes bending, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds or more.
  • Explain to public, regulations concerning trails maintenance specific to the Wilderness Act.
  • Interact with and educate forest visitors about trail maintenance and cleanup.
  • Keep supervisor informed on progress of work performed in order to meet work objectives.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-05 level: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service; OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science (no more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable); OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

  • Examples of specialized experience include: : Inspected recreation areas and/or trails; provided information to users of recreational areas or trails on resource management practices, recreation use regulations, opportunities, and restrictions; performed routine support assignments in a forestry specialty area such as recreation or timber; performed crew-based forestry related support work such as recreation trail or recreation facility construction and/or maintenance projects.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

*This is a TERM appointment. Selections made from this announcement will be not to exceed one year in duration, but may be extended for up to 4 years based on workload and funds availability.

*This is a Seasonal position. This announcement may be used to fill positions with a seasonal work schedule where full-time work is guaranteed for 18 pay periods and when not working, you will be placed in non-pay/non-duty status.
