Duties

Help

  • Performs duties for scheduled and emergent surgical procedures. Evaluates patient's ongoing needs during intra-operative intervention and takes required actions. Performs as first assistant when situation arises, assisting the Surgeon in the positioning and intra-operative care of the patient. Performs surgical counts with RN at beginning and end of procedures and any time a situation may warrant a count. Assist in the transport of patients. Assist in the insertion of CVP lines and able to administer oxygen and provide emergency supplies; assist in the set-up and turnover of operating rooms. Input surgical caseload data into computer database.
  • Assist with the duties of the Medical Supply Technician. Follows strict Infection Control practices. Inventory and decontaminated all surgical instrumentation from the OR and other units. Decontamination and sterilize powered surgical instruments. Check instrumentation for proper functioning prior to sterilization.
  • Tracks and follow-ups on work orders and supply requests. Inventory, submit orders and restock supplies utilized within perioperative department. Practices "rotation of stock" and "first in-first out"; checks for outdates when restocking.

Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957. Seasonal Influenza immunization is required for civilian health care facility staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.

Security Clearance: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Fingerprint results and background investigation documentation must be cleared prior to hire. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume.

Experience:

Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties such as: Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care. Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus. Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement. Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

GS-06: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-05, in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples of Specialized Experience: Select surgical and gastrointestinal supplies for surgical cases as needed. Sets up surgical suits as indicated by surgical case. Prepares and maintains the sterile field of the operating room using the principles of aseptic technique.

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave is earned.

Work hours are subject to be on-call and call back status.

Subject to rotating shifts, weekends and holidays.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.
