Duties

Help
  • Oversees and preserves clonal and seed-propagated subtropical/tropical fruit and sugarcane and related species collections. This includes planning for plant rotation, land preparation, treatment, and processing to collect required descriptors.
  • Provides phenotypic and genotypic (via DNA genetic markers) characterization of the accessions to the collection, accomplished directly or in collaboration with other scientists.
  • Implements new procedures used to accomplish the propagation, increase, preservation, genetic and phenotypic characterization, evaluation, maintenance, and distribution of germplasm and associated information.
  • Collects or acquires genetic resources of cultivated and wild subtropical/tropical fruits and sugarcane species in response to needs expressed by users.
  • Searches scientific literature pertaining to the genetic diversity, preservation, genetic and phenotypic characterization, evaluation, and maintenance of subtropical/tropical fruit crops and sugarcane germplasm.
  • Coordinates activities with other research and service scientists at SHRU as well as other research and service scientists in the National Plant Germplasm System.
  • Performs and reports genetic and botanical studies relevant to assessing genetic diversity and/or redundancy associated with the national working collections maintained at the SHRU.
  • Recommends and/or develops alternative methods/techniques to accomplish objectives especially with the novel crops where standard procedures do not apply.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements:

Basic Requirement for the 0471 series:
Degree: agronomy; or related discipline of science that included at least 30 semester hours of course work in the basic plant sciences, including at least 15 semester hours in agronomic subjects, such as those dealing with plant breeding, crop production, and soil and crop management.

OR

Combination of education and experience: at least 30 semester hours in the basic plant sciences, including a minimum of 15 semester hours in agronomic subjects, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Evaluation of Education: Course work in such subjects as botany, plant taxonomy, plant physiology, plant breeding or genetics, plant ecology, plant pathology, microbiology, agronomy, or those dealing with basic soil-water-plant relationships of an agronomic or ecologic nature may be used to meet the 30-semester-hour requirement in the basic plant sciences. Agronomy courses include agronomy, fieldcrops, field crop production or management, soil and crop management, plant breeding and development, weed control, and similar courses, including those in soils, biochemistry, plant physiology, etc., provided they dealt with principles, methods, or procedures that are applied directly in agronomic work and in the solving of agronomic problems.

Basic Requirement for the 0440 Series:
Degree: genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics.

Evaluation of Education: Courses dealing with genetics, some phase of genetics, or specific techniques that are applied in genetics work are acceptable. This includes courses in genetics, plant or animal genetics, molecular and cellular biology, mathematics and statistics (as they apply to genetics), population dynamics, and certain techniques such as those dealing with irradiation. OR Coursework consisting of an appropriate combination of basic courses in genetics and cytology or statistics are also acceptable.



Basic Requirement for the 0437 Series:
Degree: horticulture; or a related discipline of basic plant science that included at least 30 semester hours in the basic plant sciences, of which at least 16 semester hours were in horticultural subjects such as those dealing with the breeding, care, management, production, and post harvest handling of horticultural crops.

OR

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in horticulture or a related discipline of basic plant science that included course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education


Basic Requirement for the 0430 Series:
Degree: botany; or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany.

OR

Combination of education and experience:courses equivalent to a major in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

At the GS-12:
Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with managing a subtropical/tropical fruit , sugarcane or related species collections; assisting with collecting subtropical/tropical fruits or sugarcane species; and participating in the research on subtropical/tropical fruits or sugarcane species.

At the GS-13:
Qualifying experience for GS-13 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with managing a subtropical/tropical fruit , sugarcane or related species collections; assisting with collecting subtropical/tropical fruits or sugarcane species; participating in the research on subtropical/tropical fruits or sugarcane species; and assisting with the management of a subtropical/tropical fruits or sugarcane project.

At the GS-14:
Qualifying experience for GS-14 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-13 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience managing a subtropical/tropical fruit, sugarcane or related species collections; collecting subtropical/tropical fruits or sugarcane species; conducting research on subtropical/tropical fruits or sugarcane species; and managing a subtropical/tropical fruits or sugarcane project.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
