  • The Planning Division is recruiting for the following position and series below: Geographer (0150)
  • Generate three-dimensional digital terrain models, topographic contours and cross sections from topographic survey or photogrammetric data.
  • Develop georeferenced digital databases and ensures database information is correctly linked to appropriate mapping elements so that analyses of the information can be performed, displayed and output to create final products.
  • Apply planning and water resources expertise in serving as the GIS applications in flood plain management expert for North Atlantic Division (NAD)-wide studies and projects.
  • Develop and implement improved methods for integrating study sponsors, partners, and stakeholders into the Flood Plain Management Services Program.
  • Serve as advisor for GIS applications in flood plain management development.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Appointment to the position is subject to a two year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • Position may require travel away from the worksite (TDY) to other duty locations 25% or less of the time to conduct site visits and to meet with customers, users, and stakeholders.
  • Position may require a valid, state-issued motor vehicle driver's license since project sites may be located in remote areas that are not accessible by public transportation.

Qualifications

Position will be filled under the Department of Defense Direct Hire Authority for Certain Competitive Service Positions, 5 USC Section 9905.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. To Qualify at the Grade Level GS-13
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal Service which includes: 1) reviewing flood plain mapping, hurricane evacuation planning, flood inundation mapping studies, and/or flood warning applications, 2) composing and supporting flood plain studies, 3) investigating a variety of complex scientific problems, and/or 4) developing scientific reports satisfying an intended study purpose.

Basic Requirement for Geographer, 0150:
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

  • This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce, Section 1109 NDAA direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.
