The Clinical Registered Dietitian (RD) is the medical nutrition expert responsible for independently planning, developing and directing all clinical nutrition care activities for assigned clients, including those with complex medical and nutritional needs. RDs serve as key members of the interdisciplinary team and focus on providing exceptional nutrition care and guidance to optimize health.
Nutritional Care
Conducts a comprehensive nutrition assessment for patients at nutritional risk. Develops and implements an individualized plan for medical nutrition therapy in accordance with the patient's medical program goals and objectives. Accurately obtains and interprets medical information pertinent to the patient's nutritional care to determine risk, assess nutritional status and develop individual specialized care plans.
Calculates nutritional requirements (calories, protein, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, electrolytes, fluid) and necessary diet restrictions or food/drug interactions. Diet prescribed is tailored to each individual client's according to physical and metabolic needs and designs the nutritional treatment plan with consideration for psychosocial, behavioral, ethnic and cultural factors to obtain desirable outcomes and promote long term adherence to a medical nutritionals care plan.
Develops a therapeutic plan for specialized nutrition support, including enteral and parenteral nutrition for patients with complex medical and nutritional needs. Identifies patients in need of nutrition support and recommends the appropriate mode of nutrition support, including suitable route, formula, and rate of administration. Provides initial and on-going nutritional assessments of patients receiving enteral and/or parenteral nutrition.
Orders labs, diets and consults per Scope of Practice/Clinical privileges. Evaluates and monitors the effectiveness and outcome of medical nutrition therapy interventions. May require the development of a therapeutic plan for specialized nutrition support, including enteral and parenteral nutrition for patients with complex medical and nutritional needs. Identity patients in need of nutrition support and recommends the appropriate mode of nutrition supplement including suitable route, formula, and rate of administration.
Documents nutrition care plan in the patient's medical record, including nutrition assessment data, medical nutrition therapy initiated and recommendations, results of nutrition counseling and discharge planning. Documentation supports an interdisciplinary approach and continuity of care.
Works cooperatively with Foodservice staff to assure conformance to diet prescriptions.
Nutrition Education
Assess educational needs and provides nutrition counseling for individuals and groups, incorporating a learning approach that considers the cultural, religious, educational, and medical situation of the patient. Includes information regarding budgeting, meu planning, food purchasing and preparation, food storage and sanitation.
Serves on Nutrition, Medical Management, Health Education or other committees as assigned. Participates in community projects and education as needed/assigned
Documents in the medical record, the education materials provided, the care plan determined by the provider and the client, an assessment of the client's comprehension level to the education given and the expected compliance.
Business Function
Maintains productivity standards and practices, effective time management, and prioritizing of tasks.
Maintains accurate record keeping of daily clinical activities through Event Capture System (ECS), including information required for patient workload accounting, scheduling and billing.
Manages resources (time, materials, personnel) in a cost-effective and efficient manner. Assists in developing and revising patient education materials, clinical forms, and protocols.
Schedules or assists with scheduling Nutrition Clinic appointments according to scheduling policies to include use of the Electronic Wait List (EWL) as needed.
Serves as the nutrition expert on the interdisciplinary treatment team which includes physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals. Advises interdisciplinary health care team of nutritional recommendations, goals, and efficacy of nutrition therapy.
Professional Development
Maintains dietetic registration and continuing education requirements.
Develops and implements an individualized plan for professional growth and development including participation in professional organizations and activities, workshops, seminars and staff development programs.
Participate in departmental and/or interdisciplinary meetings, task forces, and projects. Performs the related duties as required.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education and Supervised Practice: The individual must have earned a bachelor's degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university or foreign equivalent and fulfilled each of the following criteria: (a) Completed a didactic program in dietetics accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), formerly known as the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education (CADE). (b) Completed an ACEND accredited or approved supervised practice program. Supervised practice programs are post-baccalaureate degree programs that provide supervised practice experiences which meet the eligibility requirements and accreditation standards of ACEND, formally known as CADE. Completion of a coordinated program in dietetics fulfills the requirements of a supervised practice program. Time spent in a dietetic internship or supervised practice program does not qualify as creditable experience.
(2) Individuals who have earned college and/or university degrees outside the United States and its territories also must have their transcripts evaluated by a foreign transcript evaluation service to determine if their degree is equivalent to a degree granted by a regionally accredited college or university in the United States. Validation of a foreign degree does not eliminate the need for verification of completion of didactic program, dietetic internship, or coordinated program requirements. The completion of ACEND didactic program requirements and at least a bachelor's degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college/university or foreign equivalent are necessary for eligibility to enter an ACEND-accredited supervised practice program.
Registration/Certification. All applicants must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA). Advanced Level Practice Dietitians must possess a Support Clinician (CNSC), Board Certified Specialist in Renal Nutrition (CSR), Board Certified Specialist in Gerontological Nutrition (CSG), Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), or Board Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition (CSO)).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Experience or Education. At least 1 year of experience as a registered dietitian equivalent to the next lower grade level, or education equivalent to 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education, or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited university or college in the field of dietetics or closely related field.
In addition to the experience listed above, the candidate MUST demonstrate the following KSAs: (these KSAs must be demonstrated in your resume to receive credit toward qualifying for this series and grade level).
Knowledge of best practices in the dietetics profession and in scientific literature, including knowledge of research methods, study design, data collection, interpretation of findings, and translation of results into nutrition practice.
Ability to comply with various accrediting, regulatory , and agency authorities.
Ability to develop and maintain a system of internal reviews and direct quality control and performance improvement studies

Physical Requirements:
The Clinical Dietitian must be able to move around the facility up to 4 hours daily, stand up to 2 hours daily, as well as sit at a workstation. Must be able to carry light items (5pounds), examples: books, manuals, laptop computers, body fat analysis tool, etc.
Must be able to transfer items to a cart and occasionally push a light cart (audio visual equipment), portable metabolic cart.
Must be able to verbally communicate, read, write and use computer keyboards without impairment. May be over 5 hours daily. Hearing (with aid permitted) and near vision correctable at 13" or 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4 are also required
Interact with ill patients, in an environment where individuals may have communicable diseases.
Mentally stable and physical demeanor/skills to work counsel patients that could have significant mental illness as well as be able to work with patients with physical handicaps.
