Summary

This is an interdisciplinary position and can be filled as a Supervisory Geophysicist, GS-1313, Supervisory Hydrologist, GS-1315, or Supervisory Geologist, GS-1350.
As the SCIENTIST-IN-CHARGE of the Cascades Volcano Observatory within the VOLCANO SCIENCE CENTER, some of your specific duties will include:
Provides management oversight and scientific leadership for all work conducted by the Cascades Volcano Observatory.
Directs an interdisciplinary, multi-institutional program of volcano monitoring, hazards recognition and assessment, hazard warnings and volcanological research that draws upon a wide variety of disciplines.
Is delegated the responsibility to issue all warnings and notification of volcanic unrest and eruptive activity in the incumbent's observatory's geographic area of responsibility.
Synthesizes a broad array of data sets (often incomplete), elicits expert opinion (often contradictory), and draws upon the knowledge and experience of volcanic processes to forecast activity and assign alert levels for use by the public.
Modifies management structure and assignments within the observatory to best utilize available personnel, expertise, funding, and facilities.
Operates a government vehicle as an incidental driver.
Physical Demands: Work is generally sedentary, although field trips and extensive travel can be expected.
Work Environment: The work is performed primarily in an office setting but requires travel to visit field stations and to attend domestic and international meetings.
Suitable for Federal employment, as determined by background investigation.
Selectee may be subject to serving a one-year supervisory probationary period if one has not already been completed.
Selectee will be required to file OGE Form 450, Confidential Financial Disclosure Statement, upon reporting and annually.
Selectee must provide a valid state driver's license & safe driving record.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.
Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
If selected for this position, you may be required to file one or more financial statements upon reporting and annually, some of which may be subject to public disclosure.

Qualifications
Geophysicist, GS-1313 - BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geophysicist, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.).
B. A combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.
Hydrologist, GS-1315 - BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics.
B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.
Geologist, GS-1350 - BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geologist, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.
B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.
GS-15:
In addition to the basic education requirements stated above, applicants must have ONE year of appropriate professional experience in geology, geophysics, or hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal service.
Examples of such experience include investigations that involved highly unstructured problems such as understanding active volcano processes or constructing eruption histories that will be used to assess hazards or guide further research paths. This work involved other recognized senior technical experts asking the scientist for advice or counsel due to his/her personal reputation in the field.
