Duties

Help

As a Staff Director, you will:

  • Develop and implement media relations strategy, including proactive plans to work with journalists covering our subject areas and expand the reach of the Bureau programs as well as plans to react quickly to media development relevant to Bureau projects and programs.
  • Ensure consistent messaging in internal and external Bureau products.
  • Coordinate and direct the efforts of subordinate staff serving as speechwriters, on-the-record spokespeople, content generators, and other media strategists.
  • Serve as the on-the-record spokesperson for the Bureau, including both drafting and providing media responses as well as reviewing and editing the responses provided by others.
  • Serve as point of contact for all reporters and other journalists for the Bureau and assigns subordinate staff to assist with responding to media inquiries.
  • Respond to media inquiries, including during evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized experience: For the CN-71, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the CN-60 grade level in the Federal service (For qualification purposes, the CN-60 is broadly equivalent to the GS-14). Specialized experience for this position includes: 

  • managing and developing teams and supervising staff in a public affairs, communications, or other related functional area; AND
  • developing and maintaining relationships with media outlets and other key strategic partners; AND
  • providing official, on-the-record commentary to media outlets on behalf of an agency or department.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- A one year probationary period may be required. 
- A one year supervisory or managerial probationary period may be required. 
- Must successfully complete a background investigation.
- Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency
- If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
- Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form I-9.  Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.
