Help

The Corporal Michael J Crescenz VA Medical Center (CMCVAMC) and the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania are seeking an MD or MD/PhD cardiac electrophysiologist who is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases and board eligible in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology. The successful candidate will be based at the CMCVAMC and will also have appointment and clinical responsibilities at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Preferred candidates should have training and documented skills in performing trans-septal puncture, advanced arrhythmia ablation including AF and VT ablation, and epicardial mapping. Additionally, candidates should be trained in all aspects of cardiac arrhythmia management devices including the implantation of pacemakers, ICDs, CRT devices, loop recorders, and lead extraction.

Additional desired skills and/or experience include: Working knowledge of sophisticated EP mapping and recording systems; demonstrated ability to perform complex arrhythmia ablations and device implantations without onsite cardiac surgery availability; outpatient consultative cardiology (including Telehealth); inpatient attending in the coronary care unit and consultative services; competency in cardioversion, resuscitation, and temporary pacing.

Teaching medical students, house staff and cardiology fellows is a required responsibility for this position with particular preference given to those applicants who have been formally recognized for their teaching ability. A research background in atrial and ventricular tachyarrhythmia mechanisms and treatment is highly desirable. Faculty appointment at the University of Pennsylvania will be as Clinical Instructor or Assistant Professor of Medicine in the non-tenure Academician-Clinician tract. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with credentials and experience.

Work Schedule: Tour of duty is varying daylight hours, Monday through Friday; however, weekend and evening hours may occur when Veteran needs arise and includes attending in the Coronary Care Unit and inpatient Consultative Cardiology/ Electrophysiology Service.

EDRP: This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program. To participate in the program, you must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA Policy 1021 and submit your application within four months of appointment. The final award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office.

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases.

Paid Time Off: Annual leave at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period; Sick leave at the rate of four (4) hours per biweekly pay period; 10 paid Federal holidays per year.

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years' vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA. Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).

CME: Possible $1,000 per year stipend + possible 1 week paid authorized absence to attend.

Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided (VA).

Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the requirements listed below at the time of application. Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • License: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency: Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Board Certification: Board certification or eligible in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology (CCEP).
  • Language: Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical Requirements: As outlined below.
Preferred Experience: Training and documented skills in performing trans-septal puncture, advanced arrhythmia ablation including AF/VT ablation, epicardial mapping, cardiac arrhythmia management devices, ICDs, CRT devices, loop recorders, lead extraction, complex arrhythmia ablations and device implantations without onsite cardiac surgery availability and working knowledge of sophisticated EP mapping and recording systems.
