Summary

Duties

Help
  • Serves as Watch Officer in a Security Operations Center (SOC); monitors/analyzes the Agency's IT security posture on a 24-7-365 basis. Identifies anomalous activities; ensures incidents are correctly analyzed, defended, investigated, and reported.
  • Detects, analyzes, and responds to cybersecurity incidents using a combination of technology solutions and a strong set of processes. Monitors/analyzes activity on networks, servers, endpoints, databases, applications, websites, and other systems.
  • Supports incident response teams; monitors security configuration, malware forensics capabilities, and mitigation decisions. Works closely with organizational incident response teams to ensure security issues are addressed quickly upon discovery.
  • Leads teams to provide requirements to external program/project managers; gathers project related data/information, conducts project reviews, solicits feedback, and participates in meetings/conferences.
  • Collaborates with system owners/operators to ensure effective security monitoring and remediation actions are performed. Develops and reviews Agency IT security reports, advisories, and other SOC-related products for release to appropriate groups.

  • The final salary will be based on the duty location of the selectee within the range listed on the vacancy announcement.
  • This is a shift work position (Four 10-hr days per week). A 10% pay differential applies for work performed between 6pm and 6am.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions, furlough, or other emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

Qualifications

Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-12), which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for the GS-13:

Specialized experience includes performing duties such as: Applying an understanding of IT Security principles and methods; requirements analysis principles and methods; IT network architectures and operations; and IT policies, standards, and guidelines; experience performing IT technical work in a security operations center (SOC); in monitoring and analyzing the security posture of an organization on an ongoing basis; and in working collaboratively with users to ensure system security is maintained and defended against intrusions; and experience using system security tools to identify, track, evaluate and mitigate anomalous IT activity, working on organizational incident response teams, and ensuring IT security issues are addressed quickly upon discovery.

This position is scheduled to work four 10-hour days per week and involves shift assignments. Night differential is paid for regularly scheduled work performed between 6pm and 6am and is computed as 10 percent of basic pay, including any locality payment or special rate supplement.
