Duties

Help
  • Provide expert technical advice to management and maintenance technicians in the maintenance, operations, disposition, and training related to assigned complex and sophisticated systems and equipment.
  • Prepare plans of instruction and conduct training in procedures, techniques, and methods of operations, testing, and calibrating of scientific instrument or research services systems and test measurement diagnostic equipment for staff.
  • Assist supervisor with strategies for new equipment acquisitions, planning and implementation.
  • Manage projects for proper life-cycle of assigned scientific instruments or research services equipment.
  • Form conclusions as to the acceptability of equipment, validity of testing procedures and data, or legality of operation of the equipment.
  • Perform investigative studies, including analysis of maintenance history records, determination of repetitivefailures, and progressive degradation of system/equipment hardware performance.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for an Inventory Management Specialist, GS-1670 at the GS-11 level, you must have:

A. have completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or an LL.M., if related. Related degrees include engineering or industrial arts.

OR

B. 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing inservice training in the set-up, calibration, and application of scientific research services equipment; testing, measuring, and diagnosing research equipment to assist in troubleshooting and repairing scientific instruments; performing scientific
equipment and research services equipment preventative maintenance and calibration; and making recommendations relating to the management, operation, and maintenance of equipment utilized for or in support or biomedical research.;

OR

C. have a combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

In order to qualify for an Inventory Management Specialist, GS-1670 at the GS-12 level, you must meet the following requirements:

A. 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector,
performing the following types of tasks: design new devices and implement scientific and research services equipment modifications;
provide in-service training in the set-up, calibration, and application of scientific research services equipment; test, measure, and diagnose
equipment in order to troubleshoot and repair scientific instruments; perform scientific equipment and research services equipment
preventative maintenance and calibration; and interpret data, plan work, or modify methods and techniques used in scheduling repair or
replacement of equipment or parts of facilities involved in biomedical research.
