Summary

This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 4 years.
Performs a range of experiments designed to provide answers for the specific research problem areas.
Performs tests and analyses by applying established analytical methods and procedures or by operating automated analytical system according to
established operating procedures.
Reviews scientific literature and selects methods and procedures most appropriate for the research goals, including modifying protocols when necessary to optimize the collection of usable data.
Maintains equipment and instrumentation in top working condition, performing routine preventative maintenance and minor repairs, and promptly reporting signs of malfunction or need for major repairs.
Calibrates and operates specialized molecular biological and chemical laboratory equipment to achieve desired results.

Basic Education Requirements:
Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with molecular biological experiments related to proteins; maintaining and operating laboratory equipment and instrumentation; and compiling experimental data to prepare scientific journals, technical reports or publications.

Education: Successful completion 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include: Molecular biology, biology, or structural biology.
OR
A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above.
At the GS-11:
Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting molecular biological experiments related to proteins or structural biology; maintaining and operating laboratory equipment and instrumentation; and summarizing experimental results for scientific journals, technical reports or manuscripts.

Education: Successful completion 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D or equivalent degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include: Molecular biology, biology, or structural biology.

A combination of Ph.D level education and specialized experience as described above.
