Duties

Help

As an Ecologist within the Fort Collins Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Conducting individual research projects or contribute to a larger research team addressing important wildlife and ecosystem-level management questions related to energy and land use at the landscape-scale, especially within sagebrush ecosystems.
  • Utilizing ecological theory for the application of field studies in relation to species-habitat relationships, wildlife management, ecological modeling, statistical and empirical, modeling, and experimental methods.
  • Maintaining professional relationships with other scientists, working closely to coordinate land management activities, and collaborate with biologists and managers from other bureaus, federal agencies, and state natural resources agencies and universities.
  • Developing statements of work, research work orders, memorandum of agreements, and other instruments that facilitate the development of research or technical assistance products.
  • Training assistants, which may be needed to conduct field work, and maintain a collegial relationship with other scientists and academics

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Physical Demands & Work Environment: The position involves office, field, computer, and possibly some laboratory work, including bending, walking, and physical exertion. The work requires: hand and finger dexterity; physical coordination; visual and aural acuity; and color and sound recognition. When working outdoors, the incumbent may be exposed to inclement weather conditions, harsh, steep terrain, and remote living conditions. The potential exists for encounters with dangerous wildlife.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Ecologist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours or the equivalent in ecology, and 12 semester hours or the equivalent in physical and mathematical sciences.

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level:

**Three full years of successfully completed progressively higher-level graduate education (54 semester hours, 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in ecology, biology or other directly related field underlying ecological research if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

**OR one year of appropriate specialized experience that is in ecology, biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled.

Examples of GS-9 level work may include: 1) participating in the planning and execution of ecological or biological studies with a limited number of variables; 2) performing established, standardized tests and analyses on a broad range of biological samples; or 3) conducting studies using established fact-finding and evaluation procedures.
