Summary

Duties

Help
  • Responsible for program direction, budget, and quality control of the NSL program and supervision of laboratory personnel.
  • Reviews, monitors and coordinates all steps of seed-testing workflow with data management, seed analysis, and seed handling staff.
  • Provides technical guidance, advice, consultation and/or workshops related to seed identification, production, collection, cleaning, storage, germination, protocol development, testing, equipment, extraction, harvest, and storage.
  • Participates in national or multi-regional technical assistance projects.
  • Represents the Forest Service, USDA and/or United States at various national and international meetings, serving as the seed expert, participating on certification committees and/or partaking as a voting delegate.
  • The position plans the work to be accomplished by the unit, assigns work to employees, and establishes production or quality standards for the unit?s work.

Qualifications

Basic Education Requirement:
GS-0401:
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR, successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a major field of study that included 24 semester hours in course work in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. Related course work generally refers to courses that may be accepted as part of the program major.

OR, a combination of education and experience that included 24 semester hours in course work in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, AND experience sufficient to demonstrate that I possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation that is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field needed to perform the work of the occupation.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement:
For GS-12 level: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 Grade level. Examples of specialized experience are: 1) participates in national or multi-regional seed lab technical assistance projects; 2) assist with the development of seed deployment guidelines for restoration, reforestation, and genetic conservation; 3) assist with data entry on organizational seed lots and other preserved materials.

For GS-13 level: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 Grade level. Examples of specialized experience are: 1) coordinates all steps of seed-testing workflow with data management, and seed analysis; 2) provides seed training and seed technology transfer; 3) works with International organizations by providing technical assistance and technology transfer for projects.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
