This position is located on the staff of the Chief Curator (C), Department of Modern and Contemporary Art (CMC). The incumbent:
Art Historical Research, Interpretation, and Programs:
Performs advanced scholarly art historical research on the CMC collection and on prospective acquisitions and loans. Pursues broader research in areas of expertise for inclusion in studies, scholarly journals, Gallery publications, lectures, symposia and colloquia, or exhibitions. Consults sources in English and in other languages.
Exhibitions:
Proposes, organizes, and coordinates exhibitions of modern and contemporary art that draw from the Gallery’s holdings, as well as from other institutions and private collections. Coordinates with the departments of Exhibitions, Content Strategy/Publishing, Conservation, Registrar, and Design and Installation to meet exhibition production schedule deadlines, under the direction of the Senior Curator.
Collection & Donor Development:
Leads initiatives or supports the expansion and deepening of the Gallery’s collections of African American and African-diasporic art through the acquisition of works of art of the highest quality and relevance to the Gallery’s collecting policies.
Collection Management:
Participates in the management of CMC collections, including paintings, sculpture, mixed media, and new media owned by and on loan to the Gallery.
Public Service and Collegiality:
Provides accurate and informative responses to inquiries from outside scholars, colleagues, and the public concerning works in the collection or other requests in areas of expertise.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary, the incumbent may walk to other offices in the East and West Buildings.
Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook Requirements. Applicants must have a minimum of one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility comparable to the next lower grade or comparable pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector.
For the GS-12: Specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-11 level, includes one year of curatorial experience focusing on modern and contemporary African American and African-diasporic art.
For the GS-13: Specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-12 level, includes three years of curatorial experience focusing on modern and contemporary African American and African-diasporic art.
For the GS-14: Specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-13 level, includes six years of curatorial experience focusing on modern and contemporary African American and African-diasporic art.
Other Relevant Eligibility Criteria: Must be available for periodic weekend duty. Must be available for U.S. and world travel, up to 7 days per trip.
