As a Accounting Technician you will be responsible for financial service functions at the field level, including collection of Individual Indian Money (IIM) accounts, verification and maintenance of accounts and accounting data. The incumbent will also provide customer service to walk-in visitors as well as callers and responds to questions of a routine to complex nature regarding various aspect of accounting.
Summary

The incumbent will also provide customer service to walk-in visitors as well as callers and responds to questions of a routine to complex nature regarding various aspect of accounting.
Listed below are the full performance duties of this position at the GS-07. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to develop into these duties.
As an Accounting Technician GS-0525-5/6/7, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:
Prepare a variety of complex financial documents for trust fund account transactions and routine account maintenance.
Reconcile accounts and determine adjustments required to bring accounts into balance.
Responsible for processing Individual Indian Money (IIM) account disbursements and assures that all disbursements are correctly encoded per authorization, in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulation (CFR).
Provide beneficiary contact services to internal and external stakeholders by answering telephone calls, greeting visitors, and directing them appropriately.
Coordinate work with Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Area programs, State, Municipal and tribal agencies in connection with IIM and tribal accounts.
Serve as a representative of Office of Special Trustee (OST) and provides support for outreach activities.
Establish and maintain individual jacket files on all accounts throughout the life cycle of the account.
Audit files to ensure all transactions are processed, in accordance with regulations and OST policies.
Ensure compliance with Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), Privacy Act and regulations to maintain the confidentiality of trust funds, documents, and records.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet the qualification requirements contained in the OPM Standards. For this position, they are listed below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
FOR GS-05 GRADE LEVEL: Applicants must possess A, B, or C below: A. One (1) year of specialized experience that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service that includes: assist with preparing financial document and trust asset account transactions using standardized procedures; analyze various financial documents for accuracy and completeness; input and review financial and accounting information into an automated financial and account system; identify invalid financial and accounting transactions. OR B. Successful completion of four (4) years of education above high school. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial, or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. OR C. A combination of specialized experience (as defined in A above) and education (as described in B above) that equates to one full year of experience. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. First calculate the percentage of qualifying education you have as a percentage of the education required. Next, calculate the percentage of specialized experience you have as a percentage of the experience required. Then, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100% for you to qualify for the position at the GS-05 grade level.
FOR GS-06 GRADE LEVEL: One (1) year of specialized experience that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service that includes: perform research to resolve financial account discrepancies and errors; recognize various financial transactions, codes or account disbursements by applying the appropriate procedures, practices and policies; answer customer questions about financial and account services; classify and code transactions into an automated financial and accounting system.
FOR GS-07 GRADE LEVEL: One (1) year of specialized experience that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the Federal service that includes: examine, verify and maintain accounts and accounting data; apply a variety of complex accounting procedures, practices, policies and standardized bookkeeping practices to prepare financial account documents; reconcile accounts and determine adjustments; resolve complex transactions in an automated financial and accounting system; resolve reconciliation errors and account disbursements; coordinate work with federal, state, and municipal procedures, policies, and regulations requirements.

Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates MUST have completed one year (52 weeks) of service at the next lower grade level.
Education
For the GS-06 and above, as a general rule, education is not creditable; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position.
