As a HYDROLOGIST within the UPPER MIDWEST ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE CENTER, some of your specific duties will include:
- Maintains a high level of competence in his/her discipline specialty, a working competence in other technical disciplines, and an awareness of new
technological developments in hydrology; develops methods for applying techniques and modifying such, as required, in the study of local hydrologic or related water resource problems and demonstrates or utilizes new or modified techniques in the comprehensive study of water resources for specific geographic areas of investigation.
- Serves as a Project Chief or senior project member for complete hydrologic investigations by planning, conducting, and reporting on interpretive studies that typically require modification of established techniques or procedures and extensive collection, interpretation, analysis, and evaluation of hydrologic data.
- Discusses agreements, study methods, approach, techniques, and desired results with management and representatives of cooperative agencies
to implement hydrologic studies. Reconciles differences in approach or scope of study objectives in order to develop a comprehensive and scientifically sound report that can be used for comprehensive water resource management decision-making.
- Develops project proposals or descriptions that summarize critical information relating to the objective, approach, funding, and expected results of
proposed investigations, and defends recommendations for initiation of new projects to higher level management.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work requires frequent physical exertion while conducting field portions of project work and with inspection of ongoing operations, including walking over rough, rocky, or uneven terrain; lifting and carrying equipment and supplies; and wading in streams in all types of weather.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work involves some degree of risk when conducting on-the-ground assessment of operations as well as exposure to moderate discomfort from such extremes as heat, cold, and inclement weather.
Key Requirements:
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. **OR
B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education (54 semester hours, 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a Ph.D. degree in hydrology or other directly related field of study or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in hydrology or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
**OR one year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service.
Examples of such experience include experience in the field of geomorphology, ideally with fluvial geomorphology; Experience in development, management, testing, and analysis with hydrogeomorphic classification systems and conceptual models; Knowledge sufficient to interpret the effect and impact of any change in the level or use of water resources for geographic areas. Knowledge in compiling hydrology, hydraulic, water level, and sediment load data for testing and interpreting hydrogeomorphic models; Experience in leading projects, preparing technical documents, presenting findings, and publishing data and reports; Related experience planning and conducting scientific projects, providing conceptual and technical recommendations with the potential use and application of GIS in biological and geomorphological investigations, and compiling valid and reliable data.
**OR a combination of successfully completed graduate level education, as described, above that is beyond the second year of progressive graduate study and professional experience, as described above.
