Summary

The Senior Technologist, Aeropropulsion, serves as a senior technical expert at NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, OH, supporting research and development across a broad range of programs and projects for Agency. You will provide technical and thought leadership of the Center's aeropropulsion technical activities in research and development, design, test, and evaluation of advanced, complex aeropropulsion systems.

Duties

Help
  • Establishes and leads teams consisting of the Agency's best experts in aeropropulsion, augmented by industry, national laboratories, academia, and other federal agency experts, as required, in the development of aeropropulsion systems.
  • Serves as technical advisor and consultant to senior leaders in the areas of aeropropulsion systems, propulsion component technologies, component interactions, and computational and experimental methods for propulsion systems.
  • Identifies opportunities, conceives, and implements approaches for challenging research and development topics that can be leveraged by multiple programs and missions, with national or international impact.
  • Interfaces with experts in aeropropulsion systems and complementary fields to identify innovative concepts that will be game changing and provides technical leadership for advocating new programs.
  • Publishes results of his/her work, gives invited lectures at national and international forums, and serves as a mentor and resource to other agencies in the field; and participates on Agency and National-level committees.

Qualifications

Candidates must possess at least 3 years of specialized experience in the following disciplines: air-breathing and electric propulsion technologies for subsonic, supersonic and hypersonic propulsion systems with at least 1 year being equivalent to the GS-15 level.

At least 1 year of this experience must have been in planning and executing difficult programs of national or international significance or planning and executing specialized programs that show outstanding attainments in the field of research or consultation.

Education

Candidates must possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in engineering, physical science, mathematics, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science.

Additional information

If the selectee is a current Agency employee with placements rights, the employee will receive a temporary promotion and serve for a period of 3 to 5 years. Upon conclusion of the temporary promotion, the selectee will either return to an appropriate position at a grade level no lower than the grade previously held OR will be converted permanently without further competition.

If the selectee is not a current Agency employee, the selectee will be placed on a term appointment for a period of 3 to 5 years. Upon conclusion of the term appointment, the appointment will either conclude OR the selectee may be converted permanently without further competition.
