Duties

Help
  • Plans laboratory and greenhouse studies on major insect pests and beneficial arthropods found in cotton, corn, sweet potato and soybean. These studies include growing and maintaining field quality host plants in a greenhouse and in growth chambers.
  • Plans, conducts, and reports the data collected from experimental field plots
  • Devises sampling procedures for the plants and arthropods found in the plots; processes, summarizes, statistically analyzes, interprets, and reports the test data and findings
  • Operates and maintains laboratory and field equipment that is necessary to conduct laboratory and field plot experiments.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements:

Degree:
Entomology; or a related discipline of the biological or physical sciences that included at least 16 semester hours in entomology.

OR

Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major that included course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.


Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

At the GS-09

Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting in a research experiment related to insect pests or agricultural crop pests in a laboratory or greenhouse environment; and collecting and analyzing experiment data.

OR

Education
: Two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. Related degrees may include pest management, biology, ecology, environmental science, or entomology.

OR

A combination of education and specialized experience.



At the GS-11

Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting research related to insect pests or agricultural crop pests in a laboratory or greenhouse environments; collecting and analyzing experimental data; and overseeing or training research assistants.

OR

Education: Three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, if related. Related degrees may include pest management, biology, ecology, environmental science, or entomology.

OR

A combination of education and specialized experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Working Environment:

  • The work, performed in laboratory, greenhouse, and field environments, often involves exposure to irritants and toxic pesticides. Safety precautions are required and the incumbent wears protective clothing and devices. All safety precautions are observed to ensure that no accidents occur as a result of normal procedures during the use of the equipment and materials.

Physical Demands:
  • Work conditions outside in the summer entail long periods of standing, walking, some lifting, bending, and sitting. Incumbent may work long periods uses a microscope to count and determine species of small insects such as thrips.
