Duties

Help
  • Drives and operates a full range of firefighting equipment to include structural fire engines, aircraft rescue firefighting truck, Aerial truck, all terrain brush vehicle, large technical rescue truck and several trailers of specialize equipment.
  • Survey the hazardous material incidents to identify the materials and containers involved, and to identify and verify the presence and concentrations of hazardous material through the use of specialized monitoring equipment.
  • Employs a variety of established emergency medical techniques, methods, and equipment to stabilize the patient for transport as soon as possible to the receiving facility.
  • Member of a firefighting crew engaged emergency responses including structural, aircraft, wild land, brush firefighting, emergency medical response, hazardous material, monitoring/control and containment.
  • Operates several types of portable and fixed equipment to include deluge guns, nozzles, fans, axes, hoses, generators, atmospheric monitoring meters and several pieces of related equipment.
  • Serves a member of a firefighting crew engaged in technical rescue, confine space/high angle rescue and water rescue operations.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random drug testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position requires the incumbent to work a 144-hour bi-weekly tour of duty and is subject to rotating assignments between all Fort Benning fire stations, to provide cross staffing and meet staffing requirements.
  • This position requires you to wear a uniform.
  • Must be able to pass pre-appointment physical and subsequent periodic medical examinations in accordance with (IAW) Department of Defense (DoD) 6055.5-M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • The incumbent of this position will work rotating shifts.
  • This position requires you to participate in the Fort Benning Fire Division's Fitness and Wellness Program in accordance with National Fire Protection Association 1583 and Department of Defense Instruction (DoDI) 6055.6 Fitness and Wellness.
  • Heavy physical effort is required in the frequent handling of objects such as cylinders and extinguishers weighing 45 lbs or more; may be required to lift/carry personnel such as an adult male in emergency situations.
  • Employee must maintain current Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (CPR and AED) card.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To qualify at GS-05 Level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling or extinguishing structural and non-structural fires as a member of an organized fire department; Performing rescue operations; Utilizing and maintaining firefighting equipment; Applying basic first aid to personnel in need of assistance. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages.

To qualify at GS-06 Level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling or extinguishing structural and non-structural fires as a member of an organized fire department; Performing rescue operations; Detecting, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards; Responding to basic hazardous incidents. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

To qualify at GS-07 Level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling or extinguishing structural and non-structural fires as a member of an organized fire department by operating firefighting equipment; Performing rescue operations; Controlling hazardous material spills and releases; Providing training in fire protection and prevention; Administering emergency medical care to victims. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

    Full Performance level. At the GS-05 and GS-06 level, the incumbent will work under close supervision and will perform in a developmental capacity completing assignments and training designed to prepare the incumbent for full performance GS-07. If filled at the developmental level GS-05 or GS-06, upon completion of the Office of Personnel Management Time-In-Grade Requirements and demonstrated ability to perform the next higher level duties, the incumbent may be non-competitively promoted to the full performance level GS-07.
