Duties

Help

As a Research Physical Scientist within the Astrogeology Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

- Use knowledge of mathematics, statistics, computer processing, and/or numerical techniques.

- Plans, organizes, and conducts a range of planetary science research.

- Supports the development of software tools and their applications.

- Utilize machine learning and related methods.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited college or university with a major in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties or materials, and electronics;

B. Combination of education and experience - education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities comparable to those normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field.

GS-12: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-12 level:

At least 1 year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 level, that is in or related to the duties described above and that has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position.

Applicants must have a background in applied sciences in the fields of spectroscopy, geophysics, physics, astronomy, computer science, and/or image processing, and the compilation, review, and publication of peer-reviewed scientific products. Such work must have shown creative and outstanding research that has led or can lead to major advances in a specific area of research. The work must have been creative in the sense that it developed a basic principle, product, concept, method, approach, or technique, or provided a body of basic information that opened the way for a major advance in the discipline or field of science. This work may have been achieved by providing a method of solving problems, opening areas of researcher providing the means of exploring the application of science in a major field.

**OR Three years of progressively higher level graduate education (54 semester hours, 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a Ph.D. degree in physical science or other directly related field of study or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in physical science or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

GS-13: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-13 level:

At least 1 year of specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the GS-12 level that is in or related to the duties described above, and that has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position.

Specialized experience includes knowledge and research experience of in pure and applied sciences in the fields of spectroscopy, geophysics, physics, astronomy, computer science, and/or image processing, and presenting results at regional or national meetings. Accomplishments demonstrate expert ability to independently conduct space-based remote sensing and data analysis, including: optical systems for image and spectrum acquisition from space platforms; multi-spectral and hyperspectral image data acquisition and processing; focal plane array sensor characterization and calibration; celestial/orbital mechanics; chemometrics and machine learning. Studies developed and executed by the scientist are expected to demonstrate originality, soundness and value to the field.
