Summary

You will serve as the Research Astrophysicist in the ITM Physics Laboratory at Goddard Space Flight Center conceiving, initiating, and conducting new experimental research with plasma instruments on rockets, satellites, and deep space probes, and conducting analytical studies and data analysis directed toward understanding and describing the behavior and interactions of electric fields, magnetic fields and currents, and energetic charged particles.

Duties

Help
  • Leads research directed toward the electrodynamics of the upper atmosphere and magnetosphere, with a specialization in the nature, causes, and consequences of electric field variations from "quasi-static" to ion and electron-mode oscillations.
  • Supports or leads mission or instrumentation efforts to study plasma electrodynamics, ranging from suborbital payloads to satellite studies.
  • Provides science leadership and/or support to NASA missions, instruments, and/or mission data analysis through assigned or awarded responsibilities such as Project Scientist or Mission Scientist, to ensure the mission(s) meet their goals.
  • Submits proposals rated fundable/selectable, and/or contributes to other core activities that, in aggregate, are sufficient to cover all labor charges for the entire performance year.
  • Communicates scientific and technical results through the submission of at least 1 first- or second-authored manuscripts to refereed scientific literature; conveys scientific or technical results at relevant conferences.
  • Successfully acts as the interface between GSFC and the larger scientific community. Facilitates partnerships with the science community, industry, other NASA centers and other agencies.
  • Performs community service; e.g., participation in center committees and activities, HQ peer reviews, organizing/chairing meetings or meeting sessions involving external science community, and other activities part of being a NASA civil servant.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic education requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-13), which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for the GS-14:

Specialized experience includes: performing data analytic or experimental research relating to the electrodynamics of the ionosphere or magnetosphere of Earth or other solar system planets; working with satellite or sounding rocket electric field data sets, including assessment of errors, calibration, and preparation of publication-quality datasets.

Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Life Science, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.

*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science that provided in-depth knowledge of the following: (1) theoretical foundations and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations; and (2) essential mathematical and statistical techniques. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus
