The primary purpose of this position is to serve as an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter, which requires interpreting complex and technical concepts for the Deaf/and Hard of Hearing (HoH) employees in the Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Inspector General (OIG). The organizational location is in the Office of Audits and the geographic location is at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
As an interpreter for the DOE OIG, you will interpret for Deaf/HoH employees engaged in highly specialized meetings, all hands meetings, seminars or training programs that utilize technical terminology unique to specific fields, including but not limited to, auditing, information technology, engineering, accounting, finance, and legal. Additionally, the interpreter interprets, as necessary, for voice and video telephone calls placed by Deaf/HoH employees.
Level and diversity of interpreting requires the incumbent to keep abreast of current technological trends and government process systems and to conduct research on topics for which the interpreter needs to enhance familiarity.
Successful completion of a background and security investigation required.

This position requires a security clearance and is subject to drug testing. The selectee must test negative prior to being appointed to this position and will be subject to random testing thereafter. Qualifications
At the GS-11 level the applicant must have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; OR 1 year specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-09. Specialized experience includes experience in interpreting between English, American Sign Language, Pidgin Signed English, and Manually Coded English in order to interpret expressively and receptively difficult material in a variety of settings including small groups, individuals, and platforms.
The successful applicant for this position will possess the following KSAs/competencies:

Knowledge of English, ASL, PSE, and MCE in order to interpret expressively and receptively difficult material in a variety of settings including small groups, individuals, and platforms.
The ability to display a mastery of consecutive and simultaneous interpretation in a variety of settings; keeping pace with normal conversation at conferences and meetings and interpret nuances, voice, inflection, idiosyncrasies, and mannerisms of participants to accurately convey the message.
Skill in comprehension of vocabulary, grammar, syntax, idioms, culturally-based expressions, and technical terms specific to auditing, finances, computer technology, information management, and legal proceedings. Obtain and maintain certification through NAD – RID.
Ability to immediately determine the most effective means of manual sign language communication as they pertain to individual Deaf/HoH person's needs.
Knowledge of the CPC developed by the NAD – RID, the national professional organization which sets interpreting standards and certifies interpreters in the United States.
Education
