Duties

Help
  • Provides expertise to Regional Director in managing, developing, and administering the Regions mineral and geology programs, which may include leasable, locatable, and geologic resource activities.
  • Reviews completed geotechnical investigations and technical reports prepared geologists, by other government agencies, and industry for completeness, technical adequacy, and accuracy and makes recommendations.
  • Serves as minerals and geology program advisor on extensive and accelerated projects requiring critical solutions.
  • Interprets and reviews data prepared by independent contractors.
  • Provides oversight and coordination for minerals and geology program training for regional employees as needed to accomplish established goals for minerals management.
  • Participates as a key member of Regional or inter-agency taskforces aimed at improving methods or tools addressing complex and unprecedented mineral and geology problems.
  • Reviews calculations, assuring basis of design and collected data are correct. Notes discrepancies and errors, and rectifies problems with calculations.

Basic Requirement:
GS-1350:

Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in: geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

OR

Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-12: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as Assisted in facilitating minerals and geology projects; Provided technical leadership, policy and process expertise on mineral projects; Collaborating with minerals operators, decision makers, technical specialists, legal counsel and other organizations at the local, state or regional level; Conducting geological studies and investigations on a variety of projects where geology and mineral activities had an effect on development and/or management of natural resources.

For the GS-13: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as: Providing technical expertise in a minerals and/or geology program; Serving as a consultant in facilitating opportunities minerals and geology projects; Collaborating with the minerals operators, decision makers, technical specialists, legal counsel, and other organizations at the local, state or regional level; Examining land and assessment of mineral potential in order to develop, evaluate, and administer minerals management activities.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
