Duties

Help
  • Evaluates and interprets scientific information regarding food, food preparation, nutrition and the health of populations in the context of SNAS programs.
  • Serves as an expert and provides leadership in carrying out Organization, Agency and Departmental nutrition and nutrition education goals.
  • Analyzes and assesses the quality and effectiveness of existing nutrition services and nutrition education to identify future enhancements or needs.
  • Drafts responses to complex and technical correspondence from the public, regional offices, States, locals and outside organizations explaining and interpreting nutrition issues relative to SNAS programs.
  • Interacts independently with staff in other organizations and divisions within the Agency, Department, Federal Partners, and outside organizations and industry on technical nutrition issues related to SNAS programs.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

To qualify for the GS-13 level, your resume must clearly demonstrate that you have one full year of specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to at least the GS-12 level in the federal service. Example of qualifying experience include the following types of tasks performed on a regular and recurring basis:

  1. Communicating orally and in writing with a wide array of audiences, including senior leadership, managers and staff, policy makers, program partners, and nutrition professionals.
  2. Developing nutrition or nutrition education resources for targeted audiences.
  3. Summarizing, analyzing and/or applying scientific evidence and data to inform programmatic priorities.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

NOTE: Applicants who have completed a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists; or applicants who possess professional registration as a Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietician Nutritionist meet the requirement for GS-7.

NOTE: Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applications will be evaluated in accordance with Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) Delegated Examining Procedures and USDA policy using category rating. Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of two or three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified.
