Duties

Help
  • Contributes to effective audit planning and the development of individual audit programs in accordance with applicable professional standards and Office of Inspector General (OIG) policies and procedures.
  • Analyzes various types of audit-related evidence that includes documents, data files, records, contracts and grant agreements, and financial and performance-related information.
  • Applies analytical methods appropriate to the evidence and situation presented to effectively develop conclusions and recommendations.
  • Documents results of assigned audit-related activities in accordance with applicable professional standards and OIG policies and procedures.
  • Effectively communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, with officials at various organizational levels, within and external to the OIG and Department.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must possess one of the following to meet Basic Qualifications for the Performance Auditors series:

  • Degree: bachelor degree in auditing; or a degree in a related field such as business administration, finance, public administration or accounting. Note: Transcripts must be submitted for verification.OR
  • Combination of education and experience: at least 4 years of experience in Performance Auditing, or an equivalent combination of performance auditing experience, college-level education, and training that provided professional auditing knowledge. The applicant's background must also include one of the following: 1) A certificate as a Certified Internal Auditor or a Certified Public Accountant, obtained through written examination; OR 2) Completion of the requirements for a degree that included substantial course work in auditing or accounting, e.g., 15 semester hours. Note: Professional certification and transcripts must be submitted for verification.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement for the GS-511 Auditing Series:To qualify at the GS-12 grade level applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the federal Government (can be obtained in the public or private sector); conducting ALL of the following: 1) analyzing evidence that include documents, records, contracts, and other supporting information obtained for the audit; 2) making recommendations based on audit results; and 3) evaluating the financial management of an activity. NOTE: Your resume must show where, when and how you performed these duties.

To qualify at the GS-13 grade level applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the federal Government (can be obtained in the public or private sector); conducting ALL of the following: 1) participating in the development of annual audit plans; 2) developing work systems and methods to achieve audit objectives; and 3) leading a team in performing audits with differing objectives and goals. NOTE: Your resume must show where, when and how you performed these duties.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
