Summary

The Dental Hygienist position will provide prophylactic and preventive dental procedures in the treatment of patients with severe dental problems such as rampant caries and moderate periodontal disease and medically compromised patients.The positions will provide guidance, consultation, planning, and implementation of community dental health prevention and intervention strategies and care. The positions located at Whiteriver, Arizona and will be supervised by Dental Department Supervisor.

Help

  • Perform periodontal and preventive dental procedures as needed. Prepare dental hygiene treatment plans for patients. Administer local/topical anesthetic as needed. Provide oral hygiene instruction (i.e. brushing, flossing, rubber tipping, other periodontal aids), tobacco cessation counseling and information on correlation between oral health, glycemic control, and diabetic complications. Make and process appropriate radiographs. Update and maintain patient's electronic Dental Record including periodontal and preventive treatments rendered. Establish and maintain a periodontal patient recall system.
  • Provide dental screenings, sealants and fluoride varnish in WRSU Dental Clinic, Cibecue Satellite Clinic and in school or community environments to include but not limited to public schools, WIC, Early Start Centers, Head Start Centers, WIC, Well Child Care within the WRSU Delivery Area; provides guidance, consultation, planning and implementation of community dental health prevention and intervention strategies and care.
  • Can administer local anesthesia for oral procedures under the direct supervision of dentist fully privileged by the facility for local or regional block anesthesia for oral procedures.
  • Routine duties shall include providing dental hygiene services to individuals eligible for services provided by the IHS in home, schools, clinics, job sites, and other community locations within the Service Unit and the design and planning of difficult, but well-precedented projects such as community dental health prevention and intervention strategies and care.
  • Using resources available within the hospital and material acquired from research, professional dental associations and schools of dental hygiene, develops and presents oral health lectures, demonstrations and visual displays to patients groups and clinic personnel. provides in-service training as needed to dental and non-dental personnel within the clinic.

This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume.

Individual Occupational Requirements:

Licensure: All applicants must currently possess license to practice as a dental hygienist in a State or territory of the United States or the District or Columbia.

In addition, to the Individual Occupational Requirements, you must meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-0682-08:
Your resume must demonstrate at least (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples include: Update and maintain patient's Electronic Dental Record including periodontal and preventive treatments rendered; provide dental screenings, sealants, and fluoride; Provide oral hygiene instruction (i.e. brushing, flossing, rubber tipping, other periodontal aids), tobacco cessation counseling, and information on correlation between oral health, glycemic control and diabetic complications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-0682-09:
Your resume must demonstrate at least (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-8 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples include: Administer local/topical anesthetic as needed. Provide oral hygiene instruction; make and process appropriate radiographs; planning and administering a clinical preventive dentistry program to meet the oral health needs of various target groups; Perform periodontal and preventive dental procedures as needed. Prepare dental hygiene treatment plans for patients; present oral health lectures, demonstrations and visual displays to patient groups and clinic personnel.

OR

Successful completion of (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education or a Master's of equivalent degree in dental hygiene or a directly related field of study.

OR

Possess a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-09 grade level.

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave is earned.

The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of sitting, recurring, and reaching during clinical procedures. Lifting is required to transport portable equipment, move supplies, etc. In addition, the position requires travel, possibly under unpredictable/severe weather conditions.

This position involves travel to satellite communities and willingness to be on a flexible schedule.

The majority of work is performed in a dental clinic setting with adequate heating, lighting and ventilation and at offsite locations within the WRSU Delivery Area including public schools, private schools, Head Start and Early Start centers. Universal precautions are used during patient treatment.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.

This position has promotion potential to the GS-09 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Promotion to the next higher grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
