Summary

Physician for delivery of Care in the Community primary areas of responsibility will involve performance of, and documentation of delivery of urgent/emergency health care for veterans according to VHA and Durham VA standards. This individual is delegated the authority and responsibility in his/her area of expertise to assume mayor clinical, consultative, educational, research, and administrative duties and assignments related to provision of clinical care in the Community.

Help

Clinical:
  1. Primary focus of practice is the independent clinical evaluation and care of Veterans pertaining to care in the community.
  2. Utilizes and promotes approved standards of care, procedures, methods and techniques, safety precautions and protocols in their application to this population in all settings.
  1. Collaborates with other health care resources to ensure quality of care.
  2. Keeps abreast of latest trends, skills, procedures, and protocols relevant in the area of specialty and serves as a resource person for the medical center staff.
  3. Assists in the supervision of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants providing care in the community.
Administrative:
  1. Participates in Quality Improvement activities
  2. Participates and attends medical center committees as assigned by the ELT team.
Education/Research:
  1. Educates clinical staff, including but not limited to physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, medical student, medical post-graduate trainees, RNs, LPN and health care technicians in the theory, practice and implementation of Internal Medicine.
  2. Assures self-development responsibilities and maintains current knowledge of trends in clinical care and the theory, evidence base and implementation of shared medical appointments.
  3. Participates in clinical research programs when appropriate.
  4. May supervise Internal Medicine, Residents, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants or other post graduate medical trainees in care in the community.
  5. Abides by all VA regulations governing research protocols/policies and/or procedures.
Supervisory Controls:
The incumbent is directly responsible to the ELT team. Care in the Community assignments evolve from the flow of work and the physician provides care without detailed instructions. The physician will work collaboratively with other clinicians and administrative leadership in the community. Administrative assignments may be assigned by supervisor, self-generated or assigned by another provider. Work is reviewed for timely delivery of health evaluative services and high-quality decisions consistent with standardized practices.

Work Schedule: Primarily Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: In Accordance With VA Directive and Handbook 5019. Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; walking (3 hours per day); standing (6 hours per day); kneeling (2 hours per day); both legs required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted).

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
