Duties

Help
  • Enabling biochemical/chemical processes to convert commodity crops, crop oils, and byproducts into value-added commercial bioproducts.
  • Developing innovative lipid and biopolymer-based encapsulation systems for delivering, preserving, or promoting the activity of bioactive ingredients.
  • Resolving difficult catalytic processes to produce consumer products and industrial chemicals from crop residue, lignocellulosics, and biorefinery byproducts.
  • Developing technologies for production of small molecule antimicrobial agents and antibiotic adjuvants that enhance the activity of existing antibacterial agents.
  • Utilizing alternative antimicrobial strategies for control of agricultural pathogens and bacterial contamination in biorefineries.
  • Resolving existing biocatalytic process issues to enable commercial production of novel biopolymers and oligomers that deliver alternative antimicrobial agents.
  • Supervisory duties include:
  • Providing vision, establishing an advisory stakeholder base and developing research programs to address stakeholder priorities.
  • Exercising leadership and supervising personnel assigned to the unit.
  • Maximizing the creativity and productivity of the unit.
  • Hiring personnel and managing the human, fiscal, and physical resources assigned to the unit.
  • Serving as the Unit fundholder.
  • Providing technical information and consultation both internal and external to Agricultural Research Service.
  • Ensuring the proper interpretation and reporting of scientific research results.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

This is an interdisciplinary position and may be filled in any of the job series/position titles listed. In addition to the specialized experience requirements, applicants must submit proof that they meet the educational requirements for at least one of the series described in the announcement. Applicants may only be appointed to job series/position titles for which they meet all experience and educational requirements.

Basic Requirements:

General Natural Resources Management and Biological Sciences Series, 0401
A. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Microbiology Series, 0403
A. Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Chemistry Series, 1320
A. Degree: Degree:
physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Additional Requirements:
Applicants must meet the basic requirements for one of the series shown above as well as the specialized experience requirements shown below to qualify for the GS-14 or GS-15 grade levels.

GS-14: Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal Service.
* Planning and conducting independent research related to the development of new technologies for converting renewable agricultural materials into high value chemicals, enzymes, and polymers.
* Developing and maintaining relationships with commodity groups or stakeholders.
* Managing human, fiscal, and physical resources to accomplish research goals.
* Publishing independent research results related to the utilization of agricultural products in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

GS-15: Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-14 grade level in the Federal Service.
* Leading a multidisciplinary team conducting research related to the development of new technologies for converting renewable agricultural materials into high value chemicals, enzymes, and polymers.
* Developing and maintaining relationships with commodity groups and stakeholders.
* Managing human, fiscal, and physical resources to accomplish research goals.
* Identifying and protecting industrially important intellectual property and successfully transferring developed technologies.
* Publishing independent research results related to the utilization of agricultural products in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Additional information

This position requires the selectee to undergo a pre-employment check and a full background investigation.
