Duties

Help
  • Plans, directs, and leads the integration of cross functional scientific programs in various technical disciplines.
  • Implements balanced programs across the breadth of a science portfolio within technological, scientific, budgetary, and programmatic constraints.
  • Oversees research and analysis programs for peer reviews to include the development solicitation, and evaluates scientific merit proposals.
  • Develops recommendations to management for selections that integrate peer review and programmatic considerations, initiates and monitors research contracts, grants, and cooperative agreements.
  • Provides innovative and implementable solutions that are strategic and tactical, and in alignment with the priorities of NASA, and national guidance.
  • Communicates, engages, and builds consensus with multiple stakeholders, including the scientific community, external advisory committees, senior NASA leaders, interagency and international partners, and programs and projects at NASA Centers.
  • Manages multiple and competing responsibilities using effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Actively promotes diversity and inclusiveness, within NASA appointed teams and committees, and within the science community.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic education requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, GS-13, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for the GS-14:

Specialized experience includes contributing to obtaining project funding through the development and implementation of projects, obtaining proposals and written requests from various agencies and/or entities; and coordinating research and/or applications for various scientific disciplines among multiple entities such as government, academia, and industry.

In addition to the basic education requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, GS-14, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for the GS-15:

Specialized experience includes leading funded research programs in the development and implementation of projects, obtaining proposals and/or written requests from various agencies and/or entities; and managing the coordination of research and/or applications for various scientific disciplines among multiple entities such as government, academia, and industry.

***For the Heliophysics Division, applicants with backgrounds in Magnetospheres, Ionosphere-Thermosphere, and Outer Heliosphere are preferred. Applicants with backgrounds in solar and inner heliosphere are also strongly encouraged to apply***

***For the Astrophysics Division, applicants with backgrounds in all areas of astrophysics, including cosmic origins, exoplanet exploration, and physics of the cosmos are encouraged to apply***

Basic education requirement (combine with appropriate grade level AST qualification statement) Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Life Science, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.

*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science that provided in-depth knowledge of the following: (1) theoretical foundations and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations; and (2) essential mathematical and statistical techniques. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus

Candidates must have a bachelor's degree, preferably an advanced degree in engineering, physical science, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, or electronics.

U.S. Engineering degrees must have been awarded from a college or university school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
