Duties

Help
  • You will provide chairside assistance to dental officers and specialists in various areas of dentistry.
  • You will prepare patients for dental treatments.
  • You will treat or restore teeth prepared by a dentist, performing various reversible intra-oral procedures.
  • You will record medical, examination, and/or treatment information as directed.
  • You will provide routine maintenance to dental equipment and instruments.
  • You will perform supervisory or lead duties if appointed to a supervisory or lead position.

  • IAW BUMEDINST 6220.9B, all personnel who may come in contact with patients must receive and maintain appropriate vaccination against seasonal influenza. May vary depending on position.
  • IAW BUMEDINST 6230.15, health care employees who have direct contact with patients may receive appropriate immunization against communicable diseases unless a current immunization, protective titer, or medical exemption is documented.
  • You may be required to serve a probationary or trial period.
  • Some positions may have additional requirements or responsibilities.

Qualifications

For GS-06, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector in dental assistance to general or specialized dentistry, dental assistant (expanded function) work, or any combination of these appropriate to the position being filled. Specialized experience for this position is

  • Providing chairside assistance with dental treatments and procedures;
  • Instructing patients in post-procedural care as directed by a dentist, preventive dental care such as brushing and flossing techniques, and other dental health matters;
  • Maintaining dental station inventory, equipment, and sterilization; and
  • Recording examination and treatment information as directed by a dentist.
For GS-05, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector in dental assistance to general or specialized dentistry, dental assistant (expanded function) work, or any combination of these appropriate to the position being filled. Specialized experience for this position is
  • Preparing instruments and materials needed for dental procedures;
  • Assisting patients in completing medical history statements or similar forms; and
  • Routing or scheduling patients for medical tests and services.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:

NOTE: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (l) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field. The following meet these requirements:

(1) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others.

(2) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence, as determined by OPM or the employing agency.

Special Requirements for GS-5 and above Dental Assistant (Expanded Function):

Applicants for Dental Assistant (Expanded Function) positions must have completed l year of acceptable course work, preceptorship, or other formal training and/or work assignments specifically designed to equip them with knowledge and skills required to perform intra-oral procedures involved in the position to be filled. Examples of acceptable training are:

  • Courses in a dental hygiene or dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Accreditation that are directly related to the intra-oral procedures (also referred to as expanded functions) that are to be performed in the position to be filled.
  • U.S. Army's Dental Therapy Assistant Training Program.
  • Continuing education courses in expanded functions for dental assistants offered by the Indian Health Service of the Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Other training comparable to the above in private or governmental hospitals, clinics, or schools that included formal classroom instruction and clinical training in the knowledge and skills required to perform intra-oral procedures in the position to be filled.

Salary listed is based on full-time work schedule and may vary based on schedule and location. A Cost-of-Living-Allowance (COLA) may be added and is subject to change at any time.

Position may or may not be supervisory or lead.

Position may or may not have promotion potential. With promotion potential: If selected below the full performance level, you may be noncompetitively promoted to the next higher grade level after meeting all regulatory requirements, and upon the recommendation of management. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed.

Term appointments may be extended up to 8 years at the discretion of management and IAW applicable regulations. You may also be noncompetitively converted to a permanent career-conditional or career appointment under specific conditions.

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay, shift work, recall, emergency overtime, and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

Temporary appointments and actions taken under this announcement may be extended up to 3 years, made permanent without further competition, and/or terminated at any time before the established not-to-exceed date at the discretion of management and IAW applicable regulations.

Relocation expenses (i.e. PCS) may be authorized IAW applicable travel regulations.

A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee and may be authorized.

Recruitment incentives may be authorized to eligible new hires.

This position may be eligible for part-time, full-time or ad-hoc telework at the discretion of management.
