Duties

Help
  • Applies quality control of the principles of ESD Inventory to soil-plant communities across a variety of land uses (rangeland, forestland, pasture land, and cropland) within the Soil Survey area.
  • Assists the Leader in the coordination and scheduling of soil survey vegetation related activities on all soil survey projects in cooperation with Soil Survey Office staff and State Resource staff.
  • Collects ecological site data using established data collection procedures. Compiles data and makes quality checks to ensure accuracy.
  • Analyzes and describes relationships between vegetative communities and soil types. Establishes vegetation type concepts and works with soil scientists to correlate vegetation and soils.
  • Enters vegetation data as well as draft ecological site descriptions and includes state and transition model components into the National Soil Information System (NASIS) and the Ecological Site Information System (ESIS).

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Time in grade: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade to be considered for the next higher grade (e.g. one year at the GS-09 grade level for consideration for the GS-11 grade level).

Basic Education Requirement:
Degree: Biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

In addition to meeting one of the Basic Requirements listed above, applicants must meet the following Minimum Qualifications Requirement in order to be considered:

Specialized Experience: To qualify for the GS-11 level, you must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level or higher in Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. This experience must demonstrate that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation. Examples of specialized experience include:

  • Provide support to field offices for technical soil services.
  • Conceiving and formulating research ideas that support or produce studies by others;
  • Developing products in the identified field of research that solve important scientific problems;
  • Assists in the preparation of ecological site descriptions.
Substitution of education in lieu of specialized experience for the GS-11 level: Three year(s) of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in ecology or a closely related discipline; OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of graduate-level education and experience, as described above, may be used to qualify for this position. This combination must have equipped you with the necessary knowledge and/or experience to successfully perform the duties of this position. Combinations of experience and education must total at least 100% as outlined in OPM Qualifications policy.

  • Physical Demands: The work requires no special physical demands. Occasionally, there is some physical exertion such as walking over rough or steep terrain and working in adverse weather conditions, but it is not on a sustained or regular basis. Much of the work requires intensive mental concentration and the ability to work under stressful situations. To perform the duties of this position the employee must be able to operate a motor vehicle on both public and private roads during daylight hours and occasionally after dark.
  • Work Environment: Much of the work is in an office environment. However, a significant portion of time is spent traveling by commercial or government means to off-site locations. The employee is occasionally exposed to field conditions including the nearby operation of agricultural or forestry equipment and close proximity to live stock. Adverse weather conditions, including snow or ice as well as humidity and/or extreme heat,often affect the fieldwork environment.

  • Knowledge of (rangeland, forestland, cropland, etc.) ecology and soil-vegetation relationships in order to apply inventory and classification methodologies for the development of Ecological Site Descriptions in unique and/or diverse ecosystems.
  • Knowledge of the principles of state and transition model development in order to describe and classify soil and vegetation dynamics in plant communities.
  • Knowledge of the operation and use of computerized databases in order to manipulate and enter Ecological Site Description information.
