Summary

This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration. As a/an Conservator Technician, you will perform conservation treatment of moderate to high complexity on archival records that are unique and of moderate to high value. Incumbent also develops creative solutions for housing archival records in varying condition and format. Working under the direction of a supervisory or senior conservator, performs a variety of conservation treatments.

Duties

Help

As a Conservator Technician, you will:

-Perform treatment on groups of archival records and develops safe and efficient mechanisms for handling multiple items.

-Document treatments performed via checklists and narrative reports. Photographic documentation carried out as necessary.

-Handle archival records and performs all conservation treatment in conformance with procedures and standards established by the supervisory conservator.

-Maintain laboratory stock solutions and supplies.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized experience for the GS-7 is one year of experience at the GS-06 level, or equivalent, in either public or private sectors, that is directly related to the position as listed in this announcement and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is defined as:

- Examining records to recognize the fragility and characteristics of paper and other archival media and binding materials; AND-
-
Determining vulnerable parts of records that need protection or stabilization and carrying out conservation treatments on archival records in a laboratory setting while adhering to instructions to ensure that documents are handled and treated in conformance with standard procedures.

Examples of this experience are: mending paper in various formats (loose, bound, oversized) using long fiber paper and paste, heat-set or remoistenable tissues; humidification and flattening of rolled and folded documents; mold remediation including separation of blocked or fused sheets; separation of adhesive attachments containing multiple layers; fabrication of custom housings (boxes, folders, polyester L-sleeves); and making stock lab solutions (paste, methylcellulose, heat-set and remoistenable tissues)

  • Work is performed in a laboratory environment and incumbent encounters some exertion such as long periods of standing, recurring bending, stooping, stretching, reaching and similar activities. Lifting of moderate weight (30-40 pounds) in the form of archival records and supplies is also required.
  • Incumbent works in an area where there is exposure to moderately hazardous chemicals and flammable solvents, and exercises specific safety precautions in regard to these substances.
  • This position is a 3 year Term Appointment: A Term appointment is a non-status appointment to a position in the competitive service, made for a specified period of time exceeding 1 year and lasting not more than 4 years.
