The position is located at the Mescalero Service Unit, Mescalero, NM, and reports to the Custodial Worker Supervisor. The purpose of the position is to provide a sanitary environment for the hospital and other buildings at the Service Unit.

Vacuums, dusts, sweeps, cleans carpets, corridors, patient care areas, utility rooms, linen rooms, offices, employees' lounge, ventilation louvers and washes walls, windows and glass partitions and other areas daily.
Scrubs and cleans commodes, urinals, washstands, fixtures and mirror, soap and paper towel dispensers with scouring power/cream and disinfect with germicidal solution.
Replenishes soap and paper items such as tissue, toilet paper and towels.
Floor Care/Cleaning
Wet mops floors, vacuums using water equipment attachment for wet floor pick up on plumbing overflow and for other floor cleaning methods.
Strips, reapplies floor sealer, floor finishes and polishes with electric floor polisher as necessary.
Waste Collection
Collects soiled linen from rooms and carries to laundry disposal area. Delivers clean linen to areas as requisitioned. Removes and replaces soiled drapery and cubicle curtains as required.
Empties waste baskets, trash containers and carries trash to compactor. Cleans waste baskets and trash containers as needed.
Transports and disposes of biomedical waste in the proper containers.
Disinfection/Infection Control
Cleans rooms on special cleaning detail as directed using proper antiseptic cleaning techniques.
Cleans blood and/or body fluids using proper infection control techniques.
Cleans treatment rooms, exam rooms, X-ray rooms, and laboratory which require special cleaning to keep the risk of contamination to a minimum.
Provides terminal cleaning of exam rooms and other areas, as needed, using the correct cleaning solutions and procedures.
Removes contaminated linen and trash.
Determine appropriate isolation procedures.
Inventory
Determines appropriate stock levels of paper supplies, cleaning agents, floor finishes/sealers and other housekeeping supplies.
Selectee may be subject to a probationary/trial period.
ESEP appointees typically serve a two year trial period.
U.S. Citizenship is required.
Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Upon tentative selection, selectee will be requested to complete, sign, and submit the Addendum to OF-306, Child Care & Indian Child Care Worker Position form. Due to this requirement, the agency must ensure that persons hired for these positions have not been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes.
Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957. Seasonal Influenza immunization is required for civilian health care facility staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.
On-call hours or standby duty may be required.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates for this position will be evaluated under the Federal Wage System (FWS) Job Grading Standards. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work.
Screen Out Element: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
WG-3566-03: Experience in performing a variety of custodial duties including general cleaning, floor care cleaning, waste collection, disinfection/infection control, and inventory. Operates heavy industrial type power operated equipment. Scrubs, wet mops, waxes, and polishes floors. Cleans walls, ceilings, room partitions and polishes fixtures that can be reached only by ladder. Washes and replaces venetian blinds. Removes stains from a variety of surfaces such as rugs, drapes, walls, floors and fixtures by use of chemicals and cleaning solutions. Moves furniture, cabinets, boxes, crates and equipment to clean areas. Follows specific and easily understood instructions concerning what to clean and what cleaning methods and equipment to use. Works inside with adequate lighting and ventilation. Will occasionally work outside when washing windows or cleaning entrance areas of the buildings. Will be exposed to some mechanical hazards, some moving objects, wet floors, toxic or caustic chemicals and contagious diseases. Required to follow universal precautions and use personal protective equipment/supplies when a tasks requires the use of these items.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave is earned.
