Duties

Help
  • You will develop the next generation of state-of-the-art predictive and assimilative models of the deep atmosphere, extending from the surface to the exobase.
  • You will support the section?s mission to deliver on the Navy?s specific short- and long-term goals for improved numerical prediction and specification of operationally relevant aspects of the deep atmospheric environment.
  • You will work within interdivisional research teams to develop new state-of-the-art global numerical models of the neutral atmosphere.
  • You will work with teams associated with related external capabilities that couple to the model, including data assimilation algorithms to provide deep atmospheric initial conditions and verifying analysis.
  • You will conduct high-resolution modeling experiments on massively parallel high-performance computers to test and refine new features.
  • You will attend workshops and regular meetings as required for the purposes of reporting to in-house managers, program sponsors, scientific colleagues, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • You will develop and present demonstrations of technology to customers.
  • You will contribute in a major team role either as a senior scientist/technician or as a task or team leader.
  • You will generate key ideas for program development based on such understanding and knowledge of technical area.

Qualifications

Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-5/10) or pay band (NP-02) in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing most or all of the following duties: 1) Developing and validating the next generation of predictive and assimilative models of the neutral atmosphere; 2) Developing new aspects of the models' dynamical core and of the upper-level physical parameterizations; 3) Working with teams inside and outside of the organization associated with related external capabilities that couple to the model; 4) Conducting high-resolution modeling experiments on massively parallel high-performance computers; and 5) Strong Fortran programming skills to develop new Fortran subroutines encapsulating new algorithms.

This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factor is: This position requires demonstrated knowledge of and experience with the dynamical and physical processes relevant to the short-time evolution of the atmosphere up to the exobase, and experience with physics-based predictive modeling of the atmosphere, including strong computer programming skills to develop, deploy and objectively test atmospheric modeling codes on massively-parallel exascale computer systems.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education

Basic Requirements:

  1. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.

    or

  2. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.
