What is The Return Preparer Office (RPO) Division? The Return Preparer Office is designed to improve taxpayer compliance by providing oversight of and services to tax professionals. The office ensures Tax Professionals apply for or renew their Preparer Tax Identification Number.  The office also provides guidance regarding the voluntary Annual Filing Season Program which allows return preparers to obtain a Record of Completion indicating that they have met IRS-approved continuing education requirements.  By partnering with our Tax Professionals, together we accomplish the mission of the Internal Revenue Service.

WHAT DOES A STAFF ASSISTANT DO? Staff Assistants provide administrative and clerical support to a Chief and his/her staff. They perform clerical and technical work in support of the function including, but not limited to, general office work such as receiving, screening, and answering telephone calls; providing telephone and receptionist services to visitors; establishing, organizing, and maintaining files; and typing and reviewing correspondence.

As a Staff Assistant, you will:

  • Receive, screen, and answer routine telephone calls, and provide receptionist services to visitors.
  • Establish, organize, and maintain files of correspondence, manuals, and other related information in accordance with IRS regulatory policies and guidance.
  • Reviews all incoming mail and correspondence to determine proper action; and, as appropriate, prepares written responses.
  • Use a variety of computer software programs involving the application of word processing, spreadsheet, slide-presentation, and statistical database programs to input, update, retrieve, gather, and generate data or reports.

If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

You must have: TYPING REQUIREMENT: This position requires a qualified typist with a minimum typing speed of 40 words per minute.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement:

GS-7 LEVEL:  You must have 1 year of specialized  experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: providing office administrative support doing functions such as preparing correspondence, greeting and directing visitors, managing a calendar and coordinating services between customers and providers for support services.

- The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-timework is considered on a prorated basis.
- To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week, on your resume.

In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following, if applicable:

You must have been at the next lower grade level of the grade you are applying to for 52 weeks (time-in-grade requirement).
