Duties

Help

As a Geophysicist within the Natural Hazards Mission Area, Earthquake Hazards Program, some of your specific duties will include:

-Lead and participate in interagency and internal working groups and committees by articulating and communicating programmatic goals of the EHP, GSN, and Geomagnetism programs.

-Coordinate, develop priorities for, evaluate, and oversee seismic and geodetic monitoring activities conducted by state and university partners as part of the Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS).

-Oversee the ANSS National Implementation Committee (NIC) comprised of external network cooperators and senior USGS network leads, facilitating a problem solving and decision-making processes resulting in the development of annual and multi-year implementation plans.

-Communicate programmatic goals, objectives, and strategic direction by delivering presentations in national and international conferences and leading workshops and discussions with governmental and non-governmental organizations at international, national, and local levels.

-Define strategic goals and develop plans to implement and guide EHP, GSN, and Geomagnetism activities to define basic earth system processes with direct science impact that are national and global in scope.

Qualifications

GS-1313-14:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in geophysics that is equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience could include serving as a senior expert involved in geophysical investigations for which technical problem definitions, methods and/or data were highly incomplete, controversial, or uncertain and whose evaluations and recommendations were accepted by others as those of a technical expert. At this level, Geophysicists typically represent an authoritative source of consultation for other scientists and program specialists, are called upon to resolve issues that significantly affect the organization’s programs, make long range and controversial proposals and defend their findings and recommendations in public or high level forums.
