Duties

Help
  • Responsible for providing advice on scientific work in industrial hygiene and/or environmental science, including the identification and evaluation of conditions affecting the health and efficiency of employees.
  • Serves as industrial hygienist and/or environmental scientist, and occupational health and safety expert/advisor on assessment, treatment, cleanup, air monitoring and sampling techniques and hazards associated with highly unstable chemicals.
  • Reviews scientific research, studies, regulatory analyses and support documents, and information compiled by EPA or other organization/individuals on the effects of hazardous substance on human health and the environments.
  • Develop and implement novel and advanced health and safety protocols and analytical programs using state of the art methodology to protect workers and address problems associated with environmental emergencies/uncontrolled hazardous waste sites.
  • Responsible for evaluating and reviews of health and safety plans/protocol and/or environmental assessments as required to ensure that response actions produce the least overall impact on the environment, employees involved and local populations.

  • You will be required to meet any applicable credentialing or privileging requirements prior to appointment.
  • You will perform supervisory or lead duties if appointed to a supervisory or lead position.
  • You may be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position:

For GS-5: Applicants who meet the basic education requirement described in the Individual Occupational Requirements are fully qualified for this position at the GS-05.

For GS-7: In addition to meeting the individual occupational requirement, applicants must have at least 52 weeks experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level participating in occupational safety and/or occupational health inspections of workplaces and is exposed to the practical application of techniques and measures used to identify hazards. Reviews records and/or reports to understand the application of technical standards to specific hazardous. Identifying occupational health and safety hazards. Assists in preparing for opening and closing conferences and outreach activities.

For GS-9: In addition to meeting the individual occupational requirement, applicants must have at least 52 weeks experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level assisting in the planning of and/or conducting occupational safety and/or occupational health inspections of workplaces where the exposures and types of hazards are predictable in advance. Examples may include the following: Health sampling; Chemical exposures and/or overexposures; Noise exposures and/or overexposures; Equipment and/or machine operations; Environmental conditions; Work practices; Protective devices and/or protective equipment; and or Safety procedures.

For GS-11: In addition to meeting the individual occupational requirement, applicants must have at least 52 weeks experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level assisting in the planning of and/or conducting occupational safety and/or occupational health inspections of workplaces where the exposures and types of hazards are predictable in advance. Examples may include the following: Health sampling; Chemical exposures and/or overexposures; Noise exposures and/or overexposures; Equipment and/or machine operations; Environmental conditions; Work practices; Protective devices and/or protective equipment; and or Safety procedures.

For GS-12: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level or equivalent. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include responsibility for the protective programs for workers who are exposed to the wide variety of environment stresses including some for which the nature and extent of hazard is not completely understood, including: chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic. Conducting industrial hygiene sampling using; photoionization detectors, gas detectors, air sampling pumps, dust monitoring equipment, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation monitors, and other state of the art monitoring equipment.

For GS-13: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include experience directing and supervising the division. Developing and executing programs in areas including: radiation safety, asbestos, hearing conservation, mold management, indoor air quality, ergonomics, blood-borne pathogens, occupational medical surveillance, respiratory protection, personal protective equipment, first aid/CPR/AED, general industrial hygiene, hazardous chemicals, confined space and other industrial/environmental health programs.

For GS-14: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level or equivalent. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include directing and supervising the division. Provides leadership and guidance on performing in-depth monitoring, testing, and sampling for various health hazards. Provides direction to managers ensuring all plans and programs incorporate federal and state mandated health and safety standards into work procedures and facilities.

For GS-15: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level or equivalent. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include directing and supervising the division. Participates as the recognized industrial hygienist on committees, and represents the agency in other forums. Researches and prepares actions to eliminate or control health hazards through new technology, improved procedures, and/or administrative controls. Advises, prepares and presents key health and industrial hygiene initiatives to other directors and senior management officials.

Applicants may substitute education for experience in the following situations:

FOR GS-05 (or equivalent pay band): Your resume must demonstrate that you have successfully completed four academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree.

FOR GS-07 (or equivalent pay band): Your resume must demonstrate that you have successfully completed one full year of graduate level education; or eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree.

FOR GS-09 (or equivalent pay band): Your resume must demonstrate that you have successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree OR have successfully completed two full years of progressively higher graduate level education leading to a master's degree.

FOR GS-11 (or equivalent pay band): Your resume must demonstrate that you have successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR you have successfully completed three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree.

NOTE: Education and experience may be combined for all grade levels for which both education and experience are acceptable.
